I agree. I cannot even fathom an Arab muslim country ever being as culturally interesting and high tech as today's Western countries. I cannot remember the last time an Arab muslim won a Nobel prize in science and technology (oh wait, it only happened once when a muslim tagged along with some White guys at CERN). And what was the last viable technology to come out of a muslim country? Last I checked, they didn't invent the TV, radio, plane, car, any electronic component whatsoever, electricity, any medical device, any new medicine, any technology for power generation, water filtration, etc. These people are ticks. They would be living in caves and eating their own feces had it not been for everything that USA and Europe has taught them and sold to them. And had it not been for some dead dinosaurs, they wouldn't even have a damn thing to buy our technology with. Muslims - only alive on this planet because some dinosaurs died a long time ago.

I'm not in love with the idea that we have something like 750 bases outside of mainland USA. We don't do it for self-serving interests. We would love not to be in Europe and Asia, but Russia and China are asshats and if we were gone things would get ugly. We don't want to be in Africa, but muslims don't have the brain power to keep themselves from destroying the planet. You know there are valid reasons why patents, technologies, and Nobel Award recipients don't come from those arab/muslim countries, right? So for the sake of the human race, USA has allowed themselves to be dragged into drama on all four corners of the globe.

Wal-mart is not well understood or appreciated by many Americans. My company does about a half billion a year in consulting services to them and I spend about six months out of the year in Bentonville. I know Wal-mart fairly well. They are a 750 billion dollar company and will hit a trillion in four years. Over 40% of the vendors that do business with them are US minority owned companies. They would do more business with minority owned companies if they could; and they have a huge department with limitless budget to try and make that happen. Walmart will teach you how to be a supplier to them and spend a lot of money to make you successful; if in fact you own a minority small business (race, veteran, female owned, handicapped, etc). Many millions of Americans could not make their bills every month if not for Wa-lmart. If tomorrow afternoon Wal-mart closed their doors then USA would fall into a great depression. Many of these month-to-month working class Americans would be unable to eat or clothe themselves, and two million Americans would be out of work. One out of every 150 people living in America is a Wal-mart employee; and over 90% of Americans will visit a Wal-Mart store every year.

Kuwait did not steal oil from Iraq. You were caught on your outrageous claim. Deal.

Did you get that from G.I. Joe? That certainly sounds like the cartoon version. I could say a lot of things to that, but the easiest response, and however it may sound, with all respect, grow up. The US does not spend trillions and trillions of dollars on these things for the sake of the human race, for good, democracy, freedom, or any of that. Freedom, from a country that virtually exterminated a culture merely to exist in the first place, extorted another culture to become economically powerful, and continues to extort other peoples for that very same...And those are just the easy, most evident things to point out. We can go into how the US systematically disrupted democratic uprisings in other nations so that it's own interests and the interests of US businesses could prosper and other such things, but in general, a big NO to this one.

Oh wow. Most of the time when I hear defenses of businesses, i turns out to be an exultation of their business practice. "But there so rich and wealthy and they help everyone everywhere".

I've done a fair bit of digging about this subject and even was going to post a huge report on it, but I felt all that hard work would have gotten little to no reward from people who would simply dismiss whatever they wanted to. But generally, Walmart is one of the key catalysts in the growing trade deficit in the country (with China, which is where a significant amount of it's supplies comes from). It is also one of the greatest contributors to illlegal immigration because they are highered almost exclusively to run the transportation and loading systems. They hire them under temp agencies, mostly, which allows them to shortcut a lot of legal issues. Also, they also contract sub-businesses to employ these illegals (poorly paid, virtually no benefits) to basically do the dirty work so that any issues on labor practices can not legally be traced to Walmart. The same for the overseas suppliers of Walmart. They work under terrible conditions reminiscent of the Rockefeller days in the US where a parent could meet his kid at work for a twelve hour shift. China's not even the worst place to work. Some places, they basically work for free because of recruiting scandals were workers brought in from neighboring countries or towns are charged ridiculous prices they cannot pay, have their visas taken, and must work of this enormous debt while being unable to leave. But, since Walmart does not hire them directly it gets to carry it's halo. (i really could go on and on about these guys. I haven't even mentioned what they do to normal citizens here)

But generally, I've noticed all companies tend to adopt the angelic stance when under scrutiny and will spend millions in PR efforts to thwart that image. Just like Enron, you'll never learn about the bad's of a company until it's unavoidable. And even then, justice might not even be met.
