that it's a maybe, that evidence appears to be leading to the long sought particle that makes mass possible. How about keep something in mind: Them particle accelerators have done nothing for mankind except isolate isotopes and employ people. There has technology developed because of the acheivements in building the accelerators but the math, evidence..etc from the accelerators themselves, is and always has been 'worthless'.
More like the evidence is inconclusive. Really, it was an incredibly weak statement. "There may be evidence for the higgs. There may not be evidence for the higgs. Stay tuned until next year." This is like someone at CERN's idea of a joke--call for an "important" press conference only to say that we won't know until next year.
I would think the engineering expertise needed to build the collider itself will help in the construction of other large structures that utilize powerful and precisely arranged magnets.

Takes a while to analyze all of that data. I'll be surprised if they haven't found something notable. If the Higgs isn't found soon, then its mass will be too large to explain is connection to fermionic mass and the entire Higgs mechanism will have to be dropped. So the Higgs is right around the corner... or our understanding of the universe is about to be flipped on its ear. I bet they've found it.
As noted before, the problem may not concern the Higg's mass, but the extremely narrow focus of this mass.

Personally I dont think Higgs exists. Something seems to be flawed at the fundamental level of our understanding regarding physics, which is understandable [sic]. I am certainly no theoretical physicists, nevertheless with calculations becoming ever more complicated to explain simple events and our failure to unify the theory of the very small and the theory of macro events, ie quantum theory with Einsteins theories, the never ending search for GUT's and then hopefully TOE's. Also String theory which is the darling of those LP scientists everywhere is somewhat to very dependent on the Higgs being found. If there was a infallible no Higgs doesn't exist that would mean our physics of the last 50 years was heading in the wrong, one might say piltdown direction If Higgs does not exist, well that would be curtains for the silly string theory, and I say good riddance! Maybe with string theory out of the way we can begin complementing Metaphysical other than LP explanations or a blend there of for a truer picture of reality. reva

Quite possible, to get any significant chance of forming the hypothetical particle they would have to use energy levels within a narrow window close to the correct resonance energy. Unfortunately, they are not exactly sure what this resonance might be. When you consider that they may have to run each possible energy level for several days to get enough "events", it can be realised that it may take a long time. Of course, they could always spend another few billion euros to speed up the process.
'Almost certainly' does not mean the elusive Higgs has been found. Personally for the sanity of scientists and science in general I hope it is found. Personally and even theologically I hope Higgs is found. Why? Because if higgs is verified it lends evidence for the newer philosophy promoted by Dr (William) Craig, Dr Koon and other progressive creation (not to be confused with YO creation) that the KCA (a form of cosmological argument) is still valid. Just as the standard big bang model reinforced the newer theological philosophy of 'God did It' * the Higgs boson will buttress current ontological/cosmological models. * (and its a model that atheist theoretical physicists such as S. I have no doubt that there are MANY sub particles of which we have not yet proven... yet, because of their low mass they would not play much of a deviation in near field events and only might be relevant if they are part of what we don't yet understand yet only yet see via our extra-earth observatories.
