Also true was the counterpoints that Vixen, Libertarian among others have pointed out. To which, there hasn't been an effective response or ANY response whatsoever. Why's that?
As I said, I am confident that even the most keynesian of economists would understand the negative impacts of a minimum wage, whether you word it like (1) or (2). Really there are multiple things to consider though. An excess of labor would almost definately lead to a depression of wages which would effect the poorest disproportionately, would it not be favourable to have a minimum wage in times of excess labor to protect them, and a removable of a minimum wage in times excess work? (Theoretically speaking of course, I think those times are long gone) Also to consider is the level of the minimum wage. If the minimum wage is say, $3 and hour, would that have such a negative impact on employment levels? Surely the low rate would only prevent exploitation and not job creation, even for the most unskilled workers. And finally, the level of jobs 'not created' compared to the drive in living standards of those on minimum wage. If a company would employ 100 people, but a minimum wage would mean they only employ 95, is it worth the loss of 5 jobs for a decent wage? I dont know. Obviously there is then the changing of demand, the increased cost to business and hence the inflation that follows. Personally I think min wage should be scrapped, but only if we reach the ideal of a 'job for everyone' where competition for labor would create a rise in wages as opposed to a depression of them.
nonsense - all they are doing is regurgitating right wing propaganda what higher minimum wages causes unemployment when it does not
Wrong, I already pointed out where in 2009 an increase in the minimum wage caused 600,000 teens to lose their jobs. Just calling it a "right wing talking point" doesn't absolve you of responsibility of rebutting it because a failure to rebut means we've won. Are liberals too stupid to realize that a worker, working 40 hours a week at minimum wage, is making almost 4000 dollars a year OVER poverty?
For years reformers have asked for incremental increases but this has been denied. Meantime, businesses have gotten billions in profits. Now it's time to pay the piper.
a one-time 45% increase will have huge employment consequences. Businesses are not making billions in profits off what their American employees are producing generally. It is a combination of foreign goods and capital market activities.
