How Can Americans take back their democracy?

Oh, wow! This is an incredibly insightful post. I doff my cap to you, my friend, even though we're usually at odds, I think.

This is THE true statement about American-style democracy. And really, it's functioning much the say the founders envisioned it. We lurch along, but we do move.

Oh REALLY? Perhaps you'll be kind enough to point to that particular clause in your Bill of Rights that guarantees your freedom of speech? OOPS, NOT THERE IS IT? You don't even have a codified Constitution which means that Parliament can do anything they want to at any time they choose and there's not a thing you can do about it.

Great Britain is still a Monarchy, and as such you are still a subject.

I've been all over the world Highlander, I've seen these so called "democracies" in action, and I must say, I'm not impressed because they tend to stifle individual liberty in order to ameliorate the masses.

As far as our Representative Republic, unlike your "democracies", we have an ironclad Constitution that defends ALL peoples Rights, regardless of the will of the masses. Are we perfect? Far from it, and we've had our fair share of missteps along the way, nobody denies it, but it's far and away better for us than anything else out there.

Simply put, ''democracy" is two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for supper. In your "democracy" 50.1% of the people can take away the Rights of 49.9% of the population at their whim, and there's nothing that the 49.9% can do about it, and frankly that's a rather crappy way to run a country.

 

Blah, blah, blah. Still no constitution, still no TRUE Bill of Rights, nothing but blather that Parliament can overturn at it's will.

You may be a "citizen" of Great Britain, but that doesn't change the fact that you're still a SUBJECT, regardless of how much you protest and claim otherwise.

The problem with America is that they just love to keep those two parties a monopoly. You don't see a person from another party on the big debates, or even an option to register under in a lot of states. No one votes for small parties because they have the same logic as everyone else: the only people who have a chance of winning are the Democrats and Republicans, so why throw away my vote? Both Democrats and Republicans obviously don't know how to run a country, as we have seen. We need to go back to the old times when there were Democratic Republicans, modernly known as Libertarians. Bring back freedom. Bring back our country.

 

You are arguing for a 3rd party because you want your ideology to prevail. I argue for a mutiplicity of 3rd parties so that people are fairly represented.

You need proportional representation and preferential voting so that votes do count.

I have posted this before elsewhere on the Forum but the first step is to abolish the voter registration system. Voters should be registered only as voters (100% Independents, if you are having trouble with the concept). The Republicana and Democrats would be responsible for maintaining membership lists for their parties with no government funds or assistance to aid them. When people are no longer locked into the Republican/Democratic mindset and many cease to vote in primaries then other parties can enter the more level playing field with some chance of success.

Now I know that America and Great Britain are two nations separated by a common language, and I know that some words don't even translate well from 'English to English' such as the difference in our usages of the words of "napkin", "f-a-g", "shag" and "sodding", but there's no way you're going to convince ANYONE that saying "a draft in the legislation" is the same thing as "draft legislation".

As far as any "age restrictions", I have NO FRICKIN' IDEA what you're talking about, and I am confident that you don't either. You made no reference to any particular piece of legislation, only a blanket statement, and given that there are THOUSANDS of pieces of legislation moving through Congress at any given time, I have no way of knowing which one you're talking about. Furthermore, if it's still "in legislation" then it's not a law yet, which means that there has been no grant of any new power, or even that it grants any power that the President doesn't already have!
