so how did we get here?

"How the Republican Party Became The Party of Racism"

    https://www.theroot.com/how-the-republican-party-became-the-party-of-racism-1827779221

"Some would argue that having a racist as the head of a party doesn’t necessarily make the entire party racist, which is true. But there is not a single significant poll that shows Republican voters with lower negative feelings about non-white populations versus Democrats or independents. They have become the party of racism.

But how did the party get that way?"

The feeling of economic disenfranchisement among middle/lower economic tier voters, loss of white majority power due to the growing brown/black skinned population, anti-immigrant rhetoric in part based on the flight of people from ME war zones (thanks Dubya), a long history of prejudice in the US against blacks, the lack of a call against intolerance by conservative religious institutions (evangelicals), and more.

I believe a huge part of racism (from either side) is that many people have no idea what it even means so they don't consider their own behavior as being racist. It's impossible to fix a problem when you don't even believe there is a problem.

As to your question, it didn't "get" there. It's always been there.

It didn't and posting a link to a partisan website doesn't make it so. Most of the racism I see today is against whites by people who are not conservative. Racism isn't a partisan thing. It is a personal thing.

I personally blame gerrymandering. Pretty easy to win an election when you can appeal to being white to an audience.

Which camp do you belong to that you believe explains the plight of black Americans? The "they aren't trying hard enough" (blacks are lazy) camp or the "52 percent of voters who supported Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election believed blacks are “less evolved” than whites" camp?

We didn't. Racism in the United States is not nearly as big a deal as many people claim.

When Johnson needed more votes than he could muster he transformed the rural plantation that forced blacks to work but not vote into the northern plantation where blacks could vote but not work as long as they had children out of wedlock and doomed to fail.

The party of slavery, lynching, the KKK, Jim Crow, and segregation never changed. After Republicans defeated the Democrats during the Civil War, we had to defeat the Democrats' KKK during reconstruction. Woodrow Wilson, the patron saint of Progressivism rebirthed the KKK and was the first to segregate the Civil Service.

FDR was a rabid racist as well. He hated Asians, Blacks, and Jews. While FDR tried to exclude Blacks from the New Deal, some cash accidentally fell off the table, earning Democrats the black vote.

The 1957 Civil Rights Act passed the Senate without a single Nay vote from the GOP. Same can't be said of the party of slavery.

So, the Democrats were racist in 57, so it's okay that republicans are racists in 2021. Run with that. I smell a winner.

The GOP is not the party with plans to throw blacks out of their jobs by opening the border.

The GOP is not the party with a plan to kick the bottom rung of the ladder to success by raising the minimum wage in order to deny blacks and other entry level workers their first job.

Democrats own all the racist policies.

Correct. The laws of the 1960s civil rights movement only made it illegal for gov't to be racist. But people didn't change their views.

At the end of the twentieth century, Black Americans were fast moving into (and beyond) the middle classes. Black folk were getting educated, buying middle class homes, starting businesses, etc etc. The reversal came when a certain leader was tasked with ending this trajectory. The financial security of such an important voting block meant independence - and independence impacts political thought. There was no way the Left could win elections in a country like America without that voting block, so they had to be put back on their knees.

No, it's pretty much all on the Left now. We can see it clearly, so I doubt they're even trying to hide it.

Yeah, that's what it was. The particular tone of his skin (which apparently is very important to you).

Nothing at all to do with his agitating.

Yes, that's exactly what it was about. That late twentieth C uppityness, causing problems in the voter block.
