That speed limit is WAY too fast for that road. Holy crap. You should NEVER drive over 65 on a road without a median. That's scary. What if someone falls asleep at the wheel or is driving drunk on that road and drives over the line. That road is a death trap for both cyclists and motorists. Very scary.

Almost to a one when a car hits or kills a cyclist, the driver says he didnt see him. In that case the driver should be declared blind by his own admission, and never be allowed to have a drivers license for the rest of their life.

Wasn't able to segregate rural traffic fatalities from others but our crash fatality rate is about the same as the overall US average. We do have more than a fair share of drunk driving fatalities, and that's a shame.

In my work truck, I will give a horn tap as a heads-up--even at 30MPH, the wind blast from the 26' truck I drive can upset an unsuspecting cyclist.

I doubt the left lane has traffic if the right lane does not. Either get better at looking ahead or wait behind the cyclist until the left lane opens. It's not that difficult and if you look ahead it'll cost you no time and if you don't it'll cost you probably 10 seconds at the most.

I've passed a lot of cyclists. I can't say one of them has slowed me down for more than a second or two.

Hopefully people aren't driving so fast that they wouldn't be able to stop for an obstacle around the corner. There are a lot slower things that could be on a mountain road like that. Like fallen rocks.

So...you're one of the dudes who rides a black bike wearing blue jeans, a navy sweatshirt, and a gray helmet at night, then?

In some localities that'll land you a ticket. There is almost zero reason to honk at a cyclist obeying the law.

Cyclists who ride at night in the road with no lights upset me a lot.

    Let's DO make a few things clear;

    1. Bicycles are NOT motor vehicles.
    2. But bicycles MUST obey ALL the laws Motor Vehicles have to. You know, like NOT passing on a double yellow line. Not cutting across an intersection on a red light, etc, etc. I could go on but what's the use???

I work on the roads and highways and run the crews that set up construction zones and guess who gives us the most headaches and disobey the law most of the time?? Bicyclist!!! No, after watching them, talking to them, and trying to keep them alive, I don't have any use for bicycles on the road.

Pretty common, actually...seen plenty with 60-65MPH speed limits...and 70+MPH speeds.

I guess you'd rather have me just go past, and have the air blast from my truck (115 square feet of frontal area pushes a lot of air!) send you wobbling into a parked car, then?

I've had plenty of large semi's and buses pass me. It's not a huge deal. A loud truck horn when I'm not expecting it has a much better shot of throwing me off my bike.

What if it is raining? (A 13-mile round trip in the rain--or even a 6.5-mile trip home, if it should begin to rain after one arrives at work--does not sound like my idea of fun.)

Well, I am not quite sure how that might be possible, since a bicycle contains no motor. (If it did, it would be known as a mororcycle or a motor scooter. Or, at least, a Moped.)

The OP will be what my dad used to refer to as "dead right."

And no, bikes aren't motor vehicles. If they are, show me the motor on one.

It's no louder than a car horn. (Seriously: my truck doesn't even HAVE an air horn.)

Most roads where I live have special lanes for bikes. It's illegal to ride a bike on the main lanes and the bike lanes follow the same traffic laws as the normal traffic, with their own signals and everything.

Nothing progressive is coming to a neighborhood near me. I live in Texas. If you want to ride a bike, good for you. But stay out of everyone else's way. If you think a Ford F-250 is going to treat you like an equal on the road, you're in for a rude awakening.

This is not true. The state of Indiana allows cyclists to use the main lanes. Even when a bike lane is present.

The state of Texas allows the cyclist to make full use of the lane for any lane thinner than 14 feet. If any motorist has an issue with that they can take it up with police. They better hope they don't get caught on a helmet cam.

Only in areas where they can keep up with traffic.

Indiana requires cyclists to travel at the same sped as all other traffic while using main lanes and they can be given tickets for stalling traffic if they do not.

And that only applies to state roads. Cities and counties still have the right to require them to use bike lanes.

That's not what the law says. Indiana does not have a minimum speed limit on their roads. The only roads that don't allow bikes are the freeways. All public roads that are not freeways are legal to ride on with a bike regardless of speed.

In fact no state in the country has banned bikes from riding on roads other than freeways.

Cities and counties are allowed to pass traffic laws seperate from the state. Cities have authority over city roads., and counties over county roads. The fact that there are no statewide laws is irrelevant.
