    I said LITTLE direct evidence.

However, we have both the facts of the case, nothing of which indicates Iran was "crapping their pants over Reagan" (except maybe in anticipation of the advanced weapons Reagan would sell them!), and the following testimony from National security officers and Reagan White House staffers.

If you have probative evidence supporting your assertion now would be the time to post it.

Wikipedia is not "direct" evidence. You used the term "direct" evidence so I am holding you to the rules of evidence. If you have direct evidence, present it now por favor.

Edit: Btw, former Iranian President Bani Sadr was assassinated in Paris years ago. I doubt he is capable of testifying on your behalf from his grave.

The testimony of these people is quite available from my footnoted source and you are welcome to examine them.

I seriously doubt I could Bani Sadr to come testify for you personally, as you seem to suggest I should do if he weren't dead.

BTW, I would be curious about ANY testimony the Iranians were "crapping their pants over Reagan", as you seem to take for granted. Khomeini is STILL alive, why don't you have him come and tell us how Ronnie Ray-Gun "scared him" as Ronnie secretly sold them weapons!

    You're up late aren't you?

I don't care about Reagan. I care about you. You used the term "direct" evidence. You are relating hearsay evidence of what someone who is not under oath might or might not say. That does not constitute "direct" evidence as you originally averred. It is inadmissible hearsay evidence that can't be considered to prove the truth of the matter asserted.

If you enter a country without paperwork you should be expelled and not imprisoned. Seems that I am the only one of this view on this thread. :)

8 years seems rather lenient for their crime.
I would have given them 20 years.

I think that they were clearly spies. They got what they deserved.

There are some 64,000 illegal Iranians in the US and 64,000 illegal Israelis.

Not all illegal immigrants are Mexican.

Thought we'd all enjoy ruminating over this projection of power from the Obama regime on the fate of the two American hikers who are sentenced to prison for 8 years: http://www.rttnews.com/Content/GeneralNews.aspx?Id=1696978&SM=1

If THIS limp-wristed, anemic utterance is Obama and Hillary's "unflagging support" then I'd advise all American hikers to do all your future hiking inside the United States, because you'll get nothing but an expression of "disappointment" from the Obama regime. Why does this remind me SO MUCH of something that Jimmy Carter would say?

Contrast THIS spineless embarrassment with the Reagan Administration... the word "puke" doesn't begin to describe it.... :puke:

We probably need to send Bill Clinton to Teheran to get these two dimwits out of jail. Bill's smart, capable, intelligent, and, in short, all the things that Obama and Bill's stupid wife are NOT. And if Bill could snow the North Koreans, he can handle a few moron *******s. He may have been a liberal Democrat, but Bill Clinton knew how to get things done!

If you want to go hiking in Iran .... get a VISA...

Remember that the US has sanctions against Iran..

These dimwits wanted an international incident.. they got one.

There is NO reason for Obama to get involved.

Why do you expect the US president to get involved every time an American breaks the law overseas?

No, Margot, to the contrary; as time passes, I have come to the realization that we should not expect anything good or noble to come from President Golf Ball. It brings to mind the old expression, "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."

Most definately - if the law is an unjust one like 8 years imprisonment for not having a visa. Indeed he should at the very least express outrage. As should any country whose citizens get imprisoned unjustly.

When you get in trouble in a foreign country.. you can generally contact the US embassy.. for advise and legal representation if warranted.

But, in this case.. these fools didn't bother with an Iranian VISA.

Do you really want the US President to wet nurse all manner of idiots????

Perhaps that case could be made..if the US had not been lying for years and trying to provoke another Iraq.

Liebe... if you are arrested in a bar brawl in Frankfort, do you expect the US President to come to your aid?

If you get caught stealing a car in Milan, do you expect the US President to come to your aid?

Other countries have laws that are different from ours.. Who is to say what is UNJUST?

Remember.. Most Europeans think our death penalty is unjust.

On one hand some complain about the Nanny State. yet you want the Nanny State.

When you travel.. GET THE PROPER VISAS AND OBEY THE LAW.

These numbnuts acted irresponsibly and arrogantly. They deserve what they get.

We recently had another foreigner caught with a shipment of methamphetamines in her baggage in Laos. Stupid, stupid, stupid! The penalty hasn't been handed down yet, but she'll probably spend many years eating pork fat soup or worse.

They whine about socialism and the nanny state, but they are demanding the nanny state response for these fools.

I would expect the government of my land to object to me getting the death penalty in your country, as well as to any long term prison terms for the offence of not having a visa for goodness sakes. That is entirely different to murder, drug-trafficking etc.
I say it is unjust. And the public policy of my land should represent my interests in doing so to bcausemy country says so too.
I don't complain about the nanny state BTW.
Plus diplomacy is a science all its own and quite rightly. States are always exercising pressure on one another and that is the state's duty.
Two German newspaper resporters were arrested in Iran a couple of months ago and imprisoned - same story as here. The German government rightly agitated to get them released.

Yeah, Reagan would have attacked them...and then run away with his tail between his legs like he did in Beirut.

I'll be the first to agree that both of these idiots could have found something better to do, and someplace better to be than dangerously close to the Iranian border!

That said, though, why in hell would they have thought to get an Iranian Visa? They weren't planning on going to Iran -- they just irresponsibly blundered into Iran without thinking. And now, for this unforgivable CRIME, they'll sit in an Iranian prison for eight very long years....
