    Well Americans rarely get the death penalty overseas. Look at the MI 6 booze bombers in Saudi Arabia who were killing other Brits.

    They were finally deported.

    The Hikers had no visas for Iran.. the reporters did.

    No they had no visas because they knew they wouldn't get them!

    Deporation is the appropriate punishment for not having a visa; not 8 years in prison.

    Perhaps the Iranian authorities ought to consider taking a leaf out of the US book by constructing walls and razor wire fences to ensure stragglers are kept out.

    Margot, I seem to recall that the journalists at www.democracynow.org did a piece on them about a year ago. They interviewed a female member of the group who, if memory serves me right, was imprisoned briefly then subsequently released...I'll try and retrieve it.

    ARAH SHOURD: I don’t know, and I probably will never know, who put up the bail. But there was a really amazing story about an Iranian official who, in the last, you know, moments, when they weren’t sure who was going to put up the bail, if there was going to be bail, and there was a lot of scrambling and confusion about how to get it in a timely fashion, there was an Iranian official who offered to mortgage his house, because he just believed so strongly that I should be freed, and he was concerned about my well-being.

    And I don’t even know who this individual is, but I think it’s a phenomenal example of, you know, people on both sides that want to get past these political disputes and don’t believe in humans, human beings, being used in these kind of political battles.

    I'd bet the Iranians won't keep the two men in prison for the next 8 years...

    They will be released LONG before that.

    Well there are some who claim to be idiotic enough to enter a military base through the main gate ignoring orders to wait thinking they are on the way to a US city! I'd say that beats mistakenly strolling into US territory.

    Do you know any Iranians? They are as diverse as we are..

    The one thing they seem to have in common is resentment about the US and UK destroying their budding democracy with their plots against the democratically elected Mossadeegh... to cheat them out of oil revenues.
