    The article says:

"Former militiamen are offered the chance to buy their service weapons when they're done serving, but they have to get a permit for those state-issued guns. In fact, with the exception of hunting rifles and semiautomatic longarms, any private gun owner in Switzerland has to get a permit for their gun. And if they've got a criminal record, a history of violence, or are struggling with mental health or addiction, local authorities won't issue one."

    Not quite as you claim.

It's the answer. Whether or not "we" can "sustain" it is another question.

I cut it down to what really matters.

Yes, the USA is a democracy. It is one with troubles, always has been and always will be. You cannot have many millions of people and not have troubles.

For the nit-picky, no we are not a pure democracy. That'd be horrible. Luckily there are multiple types of democracy and we are the best sort, a Representative Democracy. More simply described as a Republic. There are more descriptive terms to narrow down exactly what type of a country we are, but I'm not getting into all that.

America has troubles. Well we have survived some truly massive troubles in the past, we will survive these too.

the UN is a tool of powerful countries like ours to get things done without war - it gets other countries to work together, I hope the UN is around for a long long time, just cause occasionally we do not get our way is no reason for the President to throw a Trumper Tantrum and quit the UN

America is certainly not the first Imperial Power to be on the wane but it is the first one which will go out while ignoring a situation which will very likely see the end of humankind....on the other hand, America may once again come together through socialism, avert climate disaster and as you say survive, to live a happier day and indeed one with more democracy as that comes to the work place. ;)

It's not going to work that way for much longer, I think. Thank goodness too.

Better to be ruled by the billionaires than by the Mother Theresa’s—at least billionaires know how to make money.

However, ideally, the only proper moral stance is to stand and fight for liberty and individual rights by standing tall and proud for capitalism—you know, free men trading freely that which the have for that which they want. It’s the only moral course to follow because it’s the only rational one—that is if it’s peace and prosperity that is the goal. However, if it’s rivers of blood, screams of the tortured, tribal wars, and soul crushing poverty that is the goal, by all means choose democracy, socialism, communism, or any other statist system that demands the individual serve the common good, the social welfare, the public’s needs.

Hitler was elected by the citizens of a democratic state. Telling. Yes?

If you let me have your email address I'll send you a list of affordable shrinks. You seem to be in desperate need of therapy.

Ah, ad hominem—if you can’t refute the message, smear the messenger. Well played.

Can't take this seriously. We should all be grateful that the US, one of the world's greatest and most liberal democracies takes the lead in world affairs although I understand many American's reluctance to take this role and Trump is right to demand other free world nations pay more and not just leave it to the US.

True. But your logic for lionising avarice and greed really doesn't deserve an intelligent rebuttal. Fatuousness is self explanatory.

My criteria is very simple - One should understand the main principles on which this nation was founded - Individual liberty is ABOVE the legitimate authority of Gov't, Legitimacy of Authority, the difference between a constitutional republic and a democracy.

One should also understand the basics of Philosophy (Logic, Logical fallacy, what constitutes a valid argument, critical thinking).

None of the kids that graduated high school with your son understood the above.

Yes, I think we're nearing an inflection point. The plutocrats will have to give or they'll be replaced.

What does living in N Korea have to do with the US being the #1 state sponsor of Terror - along with Saudi Arabia.

Saddam - supporting him during his use of chemical weapons

El Salvador, Guatemala - supporting death squad dictators and training their soldiers in terror at the "School of the America's"

Suharto - supporting a genocidal regime over decades - 1/3 of East Timor population killed

Libya - turning that nation into a Jihadist wonderland
Iraq - turning that nation into a Jihadist wonderland

Syria - Arming and supporting Al Qaeda/Al Nusra and the Islamist Jihadist extremists that went on to form the modern incarnation of ISIS - an act which led to the death of 500,000, the refugee crisis which has further spread extremist Islamist ideology all over the world.
Yemen - supporting the same side as Al Qaeda

Saudi Arabia - our buddy - Cradle of the extremist ideology that fuels the major terrorist groups. Taliban, Al Qaeda/Al Nusra, Islamic Front (and numerous others in Syria that went on to coalesce form the Islamic State), ISIS, Al Shabaab, Boko Haram (along with numerous others of the same ilk all over the world) ALL share the same Saudi inspired extremist ideology.

El Saud has been exporting this ideology all over the world for decades along with supporting and, in some cases, arming these groups.

Iran does not even come close to the US/Saudi support for terror.

If you’d follow my statement to its logical root, “money is the root of all good”, you wouldn’t be morally stuck in the dark ages.

But, you’re you and I’m me—-and never can faith and reason meet.

But consider this: if you had a choice between living in Mother Theresa’s world, or Steve Jobs’, which would you choose?

Just because you get a vote doesn't mean you have candidates who serve your interest or even deserve your vote.

The crux of the problem is that the facade of democracy hides the true corruption and rot of a system that only serves it's own interests.

Is this, an oxy-moron? Considering the actions of The U.N. are usually the actions of Washington DC and Tel Aviv???

Democracy breeds it’s own corruption and destruction. Case in point: The Weimar Republic.

Honest question; do you see comparisons with the Weimar in today's America? Very different conditions if you ask me and Germany after WWI was a very different place with very different challenges and no tradition of functioning democracy.

This is true, but you can be more fair toward Democracy's transparency.

Democracy gives its sick vile disclaimer right up front before you decide to buy into it; lawmaking/voting process = MAJORITY RULES

Therefore if you are not part of the, majority, you never get to experience the greatness of Democracy. Yet the rulers over the Democracy are going to collect tax money, from you, at the same rate they collect tax money from those in the majority who won. It's a krok of dog$hit, literally.

Ain’t for the lack of trying. I’ll just say that the same philosophical ideas that laid the ideological bases for Hitler, (Mysticism, Collectivism, and Altruism), are prevelant in today’s culture. As proof, I offer the newly elected Senator, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Our only protection from a totalitarian society is the Declaration of Independence, The Bill of Rights, and the writings of Ayn Rand, Man’s greatest defender.
