In other words, some fiction involved?
He was born black. He could not hide that and use it later for public gain.

And a gf he asked to marry, who was white, and she turned him down 2X.
    Why wouldn't he move on?

Sheila Miyoshi Jager, now an Oberlin professor, was Obama's live-in girlfriend in his early Chicago years before he met Michelle. Jager told Garrow that Obama asked her to marry him twice, once at her parents' house in 1986 and a year later before he went to Harvard Law School. Both times she refused him.

Because "she couldn't be who he wanted her to be" namely "black" .. I'm reading the book. And the point is, the truth is, no one considered him "black", esp. Black Chicago pols (one called him a NE liberal in black face"). What it illustrates is how important race was to him and all of his fellow travelers, the race of every person in the book is mentioned , if not illustrated.

At this point in time, I assume it to be your interpretation.
I haven't read the book, nor will I.
But if that statement is in the book, you should be able to quote/link it.

His skin, his hair style(afro), is obviously black. Who would not see him as black?

If he spoke to me in American high school English, I'd see him as a high school kid. If ebonics, then "Black"

Well I am from the United States of America and I say that NO, this website does not make America better and it should NOT make America better because that responsibility rests SOLELY on the citizens of these United States of America.

I had to laugh at that. As a young man, I spent almost four years living in Japan. One of my memories of that time is of the public restrooms. There were no male/female signs. The restroom was what looked like a large rain gutter on one side and a row of stalls on the other side. Between them was a stub wall about five feet high. No such thing as bashful kidneys over there.

Once, we went to a hotel far from the normal touristy places. After the evening meal, we were taken to the bath house. One very large, steamy, hot tub for male and female. Of course, my mother had some issues with that so the owners asked the women to wait until the men were done. Our squeamishness about such things was kind of silly and awkward for the other people there.

    Amen to that!

Interesting take on that ideas here:

Thank you. This is one of those things I see as a roadblock to any kind of rational discussion. Binary thinking, either/or thinking, us/them thinking, team politics thinking, whatever we call it, it suggests that I'm right/you're wrong, and there will never be a compromise.

I like to listen to what people have to say. Maybe they can add something in a way I had not thought about before. I don't come here to convince others that they are wrong. That would assume that I know it all and I'm flawless. I know nothing. Though I have opinions, they're not reality. They're just my way of understanding things.

Difficult for me to cast a vote on this survey as there are arguments both ways.

One thing that is for sure, the forum does help refute the infinite amount of lies made by the radical far right.

For example, the far right told us Muslims screamed F ... Jesus. But this only shows their ignorance and prejudice because we patriots know Muslims regard Jesus as Messiah as indicated in the Koran. Had these ignorant people troubled themselves to actually read that book they would never have posted on that ridiculous thread which had been based on a blatant and bigoted lie.

The far right also made up a story about Ethiopian Muslims attacking people with hammers in Minneapolis. Again, this story was a blatant lie. One I (who lives in the Twin Cities) had not even heard of since it was not reported locally. The reason it was not reported locally is, of course, because it never happened. Once again here were the deluded far right, who are so predisposed to believe any stereotype that affirms their twisted views on minorities, believed a story that was manufactured. Manufactured just like the fairy tales Nazis made about Jews in the 1930s in order to justify their hate and their evil actions against innocent Jews. And, like the fairy tale about "F Jesus" I was easily able to refute their lies.

As with both stories, I repeatedly challenged the forum righties to "prove" their claims in these made up stories. Both times they abandoned the threads like rats jumping off a sinking ship. I have done this to them on other threads as well and will continue to do so.

Thus, some good does come out of having this forum.

One thing about this forum that I see as extremely positive is that so many of us are willing to do our own fact-checking and do so by going well beyond the entry-level Google search. I think it also encourages many of us to think more critically when we find articles that encourage our biases. Now, if only we were so much more aware of our personal biases. . .

So, deep southern whites who speak deep southern drawl, should not be considered white by northerners who have a different accent? Just because of accents?
Or people in Britain, they are not white if they speak British English instead of American English?

Weird. To me, white skin people are white no matter their language or how they use it.
I guess Michelle isn't black then either. So he married a white woman because she doesn't speak ebonics?

I would go a few steps further. For example, righties here are quick to say that lefties use the term "fascist" and "racist" against them. And they get upset when this is done. Yet, those same righties have no problem calling people "commie", "anti-semites", or that they seek to destroy the white race and/or the USA. It is so easy for them to direct epithets of every kind unto others but god help anyone who returns the favor. Don't like it when someone issues epithets against you? Then set an example by refraining from doing the same (in this regard I don't mean you personally, of course).

So yes, let us all be aware of our biases. Let us also be aware of our ignorances. Righties should never make fools of themselves by believing fairy tales about imaginary mobs of Muslims attacking people in Germany by the thousand or of imaginary Muslims teens attacking people with non existing hammers in Minneapolis. Nor should they make absolute clowns of themselves by believing Muslims would scream F Jesus when it would mean they were attacking their own Messiah. Open a book about how Muslims really are and what they live by. Then these righties would not make such fools of themselves by believing in the hate filled fairy tales Breitbart and other haters conjure up.

Yes. Because that is what the rightists and tRUMP point out everyday.
But they only want the color to be white.

But you are the one who tried to claim you think one is white if they don't speak ebonics. Which is ridiculous.
And instead of addressing the topic, you had to show what a loser does in a debate and go personal.

Someone killed by a boobytrap on your property will get you charged with manslaughter rather than murder, so in a sense, there's a lesser penalty for it, but you will still go to jail.

The law concerning hot tubs and swimming pools was justified on the grounds of "attractive menace", that kids are attracted to swimming pools naturally and don't know any better. Depending on jurisdiction, you may or may not have to build a fence around yours, but know that if you don't and if a kid drowns in it, you will be held liable. Some homeowners' policies require fencing in order to cover you for liability in jurisdictions where fencing is not required by law. So no matter how you look at it, you're going to have to put up a barrier of some kind.

I don't think this site makes America better or worse. I've never yet had my mind changed by anyone here and I very much doubt I've changed any one else's (though I have been corrected and informed on occasion). This is a good place to practice written communication with strangers, often hostile ones though some are engaging, always an interesting skill, if not particularly useful.

Yes, you are absolutely correct! I do agree that we must not boobytrap property that is within the jurisdiction of a police or firefighting force, but the concept that a property owner must undergo the expense and annoyance -- against his will -- to build barriers around things like hot tubs and swimming pools because they are considered by nanny-government to be an "attractive menace" is BULLSHIT, as I said.

Simply put, if a property owner puts up signage expressly forbidding entry to everyone except firemen and police forces, then it should be up to everyone else to stay the hell OUT of his property, and, (what a concept!) to actually CONTROL their own children!

Still focused on skin color? What I mean , of course, is the culture.. not the skin color. You have no idea what Trump supports believe or desire, but in a way, considering how you conflate skin color with culture, I'd say that yes, we do want people to be of an American Culture.. a Western Culture, call it what you want, but when it is embraced, the population thrives. Ever here of problems from the "Vietnamese boat people"? No much, because they integrated into US culture. MAGA and KAGA

In a way, you're right, but in another, there's just no controlling kids. Friend of mine's son drowned in a pool of oil on an industrial site that was fenced and marked no trespassing. Didn't stop him, though. The company wasn't liable, but that didn't bring my friend's son back.

Without meaning to sound like a snot, I will say that this was a very regrettable tragedy that happened to the child, and thereby to your friend, but it may have been prevented with more attention being paid to little boy's activities.... It is a common problem today in this country -- parents are frequently absorbed with their own activities that they don't have enough awareness of what their kids are doing.

Just this summer, see how many children have died while being locked up by their parents in suffocatingly hot cars, WHICH HAD THE WINDOWS ROLLED UP. And when asked why the hell they let this happen, the parents say they just forgot the kid was in the car.... What are we as a country turning into? :spin:

When I was a kid, we wandered all over the place and did not get into any trouble.

    Apparently we had brains.
