So basically your point is that the Thanksgiving proclamation was a violation of the First Amendment. To declare a holiday a religious national holiday is a clear violation of the separation of Church and State.

I think we should give thanks to the laws of physics as they are what make our existence possible. :D

You can only be thankful for things a god supposedly gives to you?

The arrogance of some Christians never ceases to amaze and disappoint.

Gluttony is a lifestyle. Feasting on a holiday is not gluttony (but living like every day is Thanksgiving is). Also, shopping (exchanging liquid wealth for goods) is not greed. Particularly when you are shopping for presents to give to others!

    Don't be such a downer.

As God said in Amos 5:21 (NCV) =The Lord says, “I hate and reject your feasts; I cannot stand your religious meetings.

    Happy Thanksgiving, fellow PF peeps!!

Had a great meal that my wife & I cooked together. My son & his girlfriend joined us (brought a ham w/ mac & cheese.

This has been my most memorable Thanksgiving in my entire 60 years and the one I'm most thankful for.

Last year at this time, my wife had just gotten out of the hospital, spent Thanksgiving at home, then had to be re-admitted the next day.

She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring and has been undergoing chemotherapy. She was very sick from it and was in and out of the hospital.

Fast forward to January and a mastectomy, followed by radiation.

Then in June she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She finished treatment in September and so far is doing well. We're very hopeful for a good outcome.

So, it's been a rough time for us and that's what makes this Thanksgiving special. We feel blessed to be able to share a good meal with some family and just enjoy the day. Looking forward to many more, but this one will always stand out.

Hope all you had a great day!!!

It is through such life changing, dramatic events, as the ones you had to go through, that we learn how to be humble and learn to appreciate the important things in life.

My most memorable Thanksgiving was 2 years ago. I had just been released from the hospital after major surgery, losing a foot of large intestine. That Thanksgiving day, which I spent quietly with my wide and kids, was the first I could eat more than a spoonful of food since two weeks. You can imagine this was one of my most joyful meals ever.

Since then I have lost both of my parents, so times have been rough. These events have refocused my life, away from extreme focus on work and career, to rather spend more time with the wife and kids.

Because on your deathbed it doesn't matter how successful your career was or how big of a house you have, all that matters is that you have a loving family.

It also tells you that the politics we bicker about all day are not really important in the great scheme of things. I feel the ones getting most worked up about politics are the ones who haven't really realized that the aren't immortal.

Enjoy the rest of your day and may you have many more Thanksgiving days with your wife and loving family.

There's nothing religious about thanksgiving. Christians need to stop stealing (*)(*)(*)(*)ing holidays.

I am thankful for the truth.

Thanking God does not bar you from thanking your parents, siblings, friends, etc.

    The Judeo-Christian God.

    I doubt it was Zeus.

Thanksgiving was intended as a religious holiday and a majority of Americans still connect Thanksgiving with God.

Why the (*)(*)(*)(*) would someone go out of their way to start a thread that insulates that Thanksgiving has a religion attached to it?

Because some religious people believe everything is about them.

Many holidays have roots in Pagan or religious history, but Thanksgiving has long been seen as a holiday that is non-secular.

The Thanksgiving holiday is modeled after the 6th Commandment that's found in Exodus 34:22 = https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=exodus34:22&version=CEB;MSG;CEV;NKJV;TLB

George Washington started it on Saturday, October 3, 1789. He set the first date for the Thanksgiving Day on November 26, 1789. That was the fourth Thursday in the month of November, and the Thanksgiving holiday has been observed on that day ever since 1789. ihttp://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/index.php?pid=65502&st=thanksgiving&st1=. And it was intended to be a religious holiday by the language he used. It was one of those pesky Executive Orders that Trump hates so much. Maybe he will revoke it?

    "Proclamation—Day of National Thanksgiving
    October 3, 1789

Messages and Papers of the Presidents
    George Washington

By the President of the United States of America
    A Proclamation
Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and

Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other trangressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A. D. 1789."

Ironic to quote Abe Lincoln immediately after the extremist alt right has just elected a hedonist like Trump.

Accumulated wealth and posessions won't mourn your passing.

However the love you give to your nearest and dearest is immortal as it is passed down the generations.

Glad to hear that you are doing better healthwise and spending more time with your family.

What I find sad is that Thanksgiving is the only day so many actually spend with their families when it should be happening every day of the year.

Yesterday was probably the quietest thanksgiving we have had in the past 30 years but with my wife undergoing chemo it was the right way to do it.

Thanks, and your words are very wise. I try to make an effort to tell me family every day that I love them (haven't done it enough with my late parents, which I now regret).

Best of luck with your wife's chemo. Both of you will need strength to go through it.
