I won't be exhaustive so everyone can jump in and all posts will be opinions. I do not view motorsports as a "sport" nor do I view sailing as a "sport" Gymnastics with its' subjective method of scoring is more an activity billiards is not a sport baseball is borderline due to the enormous amounts of inactivity and delays golf------------pullllease
curling-stupidest (*)(*)(*)(*)ed excuse for a sport ever ping pong-childs game, beer pong is more challenging synchronized swimming- more of an art form than a sport figure skating- see synchronized swimming RACE WALKING- seriously??? horse racing- oh wow you are telling a horse to run, how physically demanding of you that must be.
I married a former cheerleader. I almost called off the wedding when she told me that cheerleading was a sport.
i wont consider just the regular game time cheerleading a sport, but i could make a small case for competitive cheerleading. i was just around it alot because when i was younger my ex did the whole competition thing, and god (*)(*)(*)(*) that (*)(*)(*)(*) wasnt a joke. I even learned a little to help her practice when we were at her house or mine just to do something together other than sit and watch tv. that (*)(*)(*)(*) is a work out lol. but plus it was a great way to grab some ass, thighs and hips lol.
Like I said small case, but I'd say it's a he'll of a lot harder than (*)(*)(*)(*)ing curling which is a sport lol.
Before labeling what is or is not a sport, a definition is required. An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others. The real argument, therefore, is what is or is not physical exertion. The rules or scoring system of the "sport" is a secondary consideration to the physical exertion aspects to a sport. Competitive cheerleading is a sport, and those who don't think motor sports are physical, has never ridden dirt bike. It's very physically exerting...not all motor sports are a series of left turns on an a smooth oval track.
Combat hot-dog eating is not a sport, imo. Boxing, even with it's subjective scoring, is a sport. To me, a real sport has some sort of man v. man aspect. That rules out things like golf, bowling and the shooing 'sports' where you're actually just competing against yourself. I would include pool as a real sport.
Golf - In my opinion golf is a past time. You get out of the house, ignore the wife, walk well maintained fields and hit a ball. I mean, honestly, if baseball got knocked down due to inactivity, golf has to be on the bottom ring.
As a former athlete/coach and free lance sports writer, I have been to many work outs in a wide variety of sports. The toughest work out I ever witnessed was in synchronized swimming at a national meet in Minneapolis. Some of the girls I coached in softball did a variety of sports in the off season. The girls who did cheer leading suffered more injuries than all the other girls combined. Any one who says these are not sports doesn't know what they're talking about. As for me, I cannot see red necks doing poker as a sport but to each his/her own.
British-type hunting is just cavalry-training, and the American version is probably training to shoot children. Certainly anyone who regards killing as sport is so sick as to need treatment.
Golf is a game. Billiards is a game. Poker is a game. These are not sports, but they do involve competition. To claim baseball is not a sport, the only thing I can say about that is that those who claim it's not a sport never played catcher....blocking home plate waiting for a throw from the cut-off man to hopefully tag an advancing runner from 3rd base before they cross home plate. You get knocked on your butt by a person running at full speed. You don't think baseball is a sport? Plus hitting a major league fastball requires athletic skill. Baseball is a sport. In the average college or NFL football game there is only about 12 minutes of actual game playing, the rest of the time is planning for the next play or standing around.
this thread is about opinions. Obviously you are a fan of baseball. I'd rather watch 20 hours of curling than watch baseball. Minor league A and double AA are fun games to attend at the small parks because of the off field entertainment I look at gymnastics and see people who train insanely and throw caution to the wind yet some old hag can give them a low score because she feels like it.
Gymnastics is a sport, regardless of the rules and scoring system. Next time you watch a football game, have a stop watch handy. Start - when the ball is snapped. Stop - when the whistle ends the play. On average, about 12 - 15 minutes of actual playing. Baseball is of course a slow paced game, built for anticipation, however football is amazingly slow in terms of ACTUAL football playing. Not standing around, dancing, bumping your chest after a tackle...ACTUAL playing of the game is about 12 - 15 minutes in a 2 1/2 hour stretch. Much of football is based upon hype. Soccer is a much faster paced game with ACTUAL game play and little stoppage.
I catcher getting blasted at home is rare, and there is more contact between players in one snap of football than 20 MLB games combined. I do believe baseball is a sport, but I wouldn't consider one player getting knocked on his butt a couple times a year as the criteria to qualify it as a sport.
I was there and personally witnessed it. Those girls expended more energy than a lineman in football. That is a fact whether you choose to believe it or not. As for jokes, your claim that Democrats started the paternity lawsuit in Kansas when it was actually started by a Republican is the worse joke I've seen all year long. But that's another story ....
I don't know if you're old enough to remember Ray Scott who was one of the greatest sportscasters of all time. I was on his show in Minneapolis a few times having done some work as a free lance reporter. His analysis and on air broadcasting of sports was among the very best. He said at one time that no sport requires LESS practice time than does football. By contrast, no sports requires MORE practice time and expenditure of energy than do rhythmic & artistic gymnastics, and synchronized swimming. The NFL acknowledges that pro football is not a skill sport. It has conceded that on average there is only 10 minutes of action in each game. In the old days MLB games averaged only 90 minutes per game. The sport was meant to be played in a quick intensive pace. The lords of the sport have slowed it down immensely in order to generate more beer sales and more revenues from sales of concession stand items. Thus, they have prostituted the game I loved so much in my youth for money. And as you wrote, soccer has continuous action as does rugby. I once watched an NRL (Australian rugby league) match in which a sequence took about 14 to 15 consecutive minutes without stoppage. The ball was exchanged several times with continuous running back and forth. No one stopped for water and there were no substitutes. That's the way a game should be played.
