Anyone been following this story? Some wacko who lives outside of Zanesville released his wild animals into the wild yesterday before killing himself. The animals include Grizzly bears, Bengal tigers, wolfs, mountain lions, monkeys, black bears, and cheetahs.

In the past 24 hours Zanesville has become a big game hunting ground, with the majority of the animals being killed by law enforcement, but from what the news is saying a few are still on the loose.

You are not a true hunter until you have been up to Maine or New Hampshire for bear. Until you have, I am more of a man than you. As for the tiger, I had aid in that. I was a freaking kid, but I have tasted tiger meat and I think I deserve a set of balls for that. Also point of clarification, I do not hunt big game with bows I make. I mostly do it for hobby and smaller, still edible creatures. Have not done that in awhile though. Not much to hunt in California and there is not much satisfaction in shooting a wind scorpion with an arrow.

I did grill some scorpions for my fiancé recently though. He was in a hairy-chested mood and wanted to try it. He backed out after he saw me soak them in egg yolk and then rolled in breading. He is a metrosexual I believe and that makes this relationship interesting.

But seriously, why are you not taking part in this hunt?

Also, after this incident, can we finally stop giving people permits to have exotic animals? I do not care how tame you think they are, they are freaking animals and want to tear your head off.

We have bear all over the town I live in, Vienna. There is a AF base here so you might be familar with it. They don't do anything though, basically dig through trash and occasionally get stuck it trees. If they see you they will just run off. I never really had the desire to take a trip to hunt a bear - I hear the meat is nasty and my wife has banned me from hanging any more mounts in the house. I'll be heading to Kenya fir a month in January for a mountain climb/hunting trip, I'll post some pics when I get back.

Zanesville, the town this happened in, is fairly close to the home I rent out in Licking County, but it's a haul from Vienna.

Whoa there...say again all after "Until you have,"

    Hunting makes a man?

    Let's see,
    buy gun
    buy ammo
    buy high powered scope
find unarmed animal of some sort
    load gun
    aim gun
    squeeze trigger....

Yeah takes real courage I'm sure...

Bow hunters maybe, you actually have to stalk an animal, and get close...
    but gun hunters?

    Where's the sport in that?

Any fool can hunt with a gun.

Retaking Zanesville, one beast at a time. Here is a picture my buddy just uploaded to Facebook on the carnage.

I'm not going to get into the "shooting v. tranquilizer" debate - I wasn't there and it's not my call. Apparently someone in charge felt that the quickest way to restore public safety was to shoot the animals.

When I look in the picture above, I see a zebra. A bear, a lion, a tiger... I can understand that those might be a threat to public safety. But a zebra?

Edit - (Or is that a white tiger I'm looking at?)

You're looking at a tiger. There are several of them in the picture, along with several bears and lions as well. No zebras were killed.

I don't see any way that type of slaughtering could be justified.

Lazy, contemptible police force to kill endangered species. Hopefully someone will file charges.

That's kinda what I thought after I looked at the picture. I'd read a report earlier in the day that a giraffe was killed, and I was appalled that equine-type animals were also being killed.

    Thanks! :)

As I said, I wasn't there and it's not my call.

One the one hand, it seems a terrible waste to shoot all these exotic animals, instead of finding a more humane means to capture them.

On the other, if one of them had mauled and/or eaten a small child, the hew and cry would be overwhelming!

    I'm glad it's a decision I didn't have to make!

Actually, you could have been outside the place when those animals were let loose. Somehow, I don't think you would have been around to make the above post.

Does anyone know of local law enforcement's access to the amount of tranquilizing equipment that's needed for such a large target group? Perhaps lethal means were the only available measure at their disposal... still a shame though.

Jesus, I had to reach down and check that mine were still there after reading this. We used to fight scorpions and camel spiders.....we never hunted them with homemade bows and ate them though.

Hmm, I'm sure the next time a 400 lb tiger or adult grizzly bear gets loose you'll be volunteering to get within 40 yards of it in the woods to deliver the tranquilizer dart - and then of course praying it doesn't charge you for your efforts.

It's silly thinking like yours that ends up getting people hurt or killed. Playing around with tranquilizer darts when 50 large bears and cats are roaming a populated area is naive thinking.

I think you're just trying to downplay the effects of tranquilizing equipment to serve your point. While it's highly likely that the local cops had little access to the sort of sedatives that are necessary to temporarily put these animals out, there's no harm in suggesting that tranquilizers are an option (if they're available). It's a win-win scenario.

That is just sick. Why kill them all? Can't they dart them and put them to sleep and carry them back to the zoo?

He was found dead at the ranch. Let's not label him a 'wacko' who purposefully released the animals for project Mayhem.

I hate jackasses that keep monsters on their property personally, but I am sorry for this particular ones influence.

That's assuming the cops had the tranquilizing equipment necessary to do so, which is a big assumption. If it's legal to have these exotic animals in the state, every law enforcement agency in the state should have the equipment readily available to bring down these types of animals quickly.

We're talking about Zanesville. This is rural Ohio, extremely rural Ohio. They would've NEVER been prepared for this, they are literally a hundred miles from the nearest vets equipped with the tranq guns and drugs necessary for this. It would've taken days to get the proper equipment into place.

The cops made the right call. Heartbreaking? Absolutely. But lets put the blame where it belongs. On the (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) who released these animals, not on the Cops called to restore public order and safety!

Also, these weren't pets. This was a private zoo. There are several of them in the State. I'm upset as hell because I was at this place last year while passing through Eastern Ohio. It's heart breaking but I understand why this was done by the cops.

Did the (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) leave a note behind explaining himself?

Makes me angry because I was going to go back this year again now I can't. This was a wonderful place with outdoor outdoor horseback safaris and stuff. Heartbreaking. One of my favorite places in Ohio.
