You go out in the middle of the night with a bunch of hungry (the keeper hadn't been feeding them regularly) top level predators in a wooded area that abuts residential neighborhoods and second guess the cops. They did try tranquilizer darts on some animals, but the attempts failed for the most part. Wooded brush is not the ideal place for use of tranquilizer darts which take up to 5 minutes to work.

Even Jack Hanna of the nearby Columbus zoo agreed that the police had no real choice in the matter. He thought it was a tragedy, but the only feasible solution.

The man who killed these endangered animals was their former owner who released them.

They did try tranquilizer darts on at least one tiger. The dart enraged the tiger so much that it rushed the tranquilizer team, who had to kill it.

Tranquilizers, according to the link below, which is for exotic cat owners, take 15-20 minutes to work. (I had heard 5 minutes, but even that is too long to be practical in this case)

Some were black bears, others were grizzlys. Both were released.

That's because a few were recaptured.

Have you seen a lion or tiger up close (5 or 6 feet away)? Unless I lived in a house with iron bars, I wouldn't feel safe around them. They are huge creatures with huge claws and fangs.

I read where one Zoo was in the process of coming to the rescue but time wasn't on the side of being patient.

I heard on the news last night that some Americans are even so stupid enough as to keep exotic animals in their own backyards! I heard of someone who owned a pet monkey, and some guy even had tigers! Those animals are not pets!

Why the concern over a few zoo animals when some people already keep these animals in cages for their own entertainment?

Yes, of course many creatures have gone extinct. However, none of those extinctions were the result of another species systematically overrunning the earth, without any regard for ecological balance, and methodically killing off the other inhabitants of the planet.

There are 7 billion people in the world. Conversely, there are only 3200 tigers in existence. Human life is not in short demand; little Bobby and Susie can take one for the team.

Yet, for all their ferocity, I fear that they would somehow fail to grasp the concept of doorknobs.

OHIO has the weakest exotic animal laws in the US.

    Yeah, they should - absolutely!

You'd think that all states would have done that when that crazy woman had a chimp living w/her and the chimp ripped her friend's face off!

Dam crazy unbalanced people who thinks they're 'cool' by having exotic animals ....... now all those beautiful animals are dead.....

I understood that some were captured, but don't remember how many...

I'm an animal lover also, but a poster explained about nightfall setting in, which made it even more dangerous and not for the animals, but the people involved in the hunt for them....

Absolutely a tiger is worth more!

A tiger isn't going to expect you to pur it through college, drive stupid and wreck your car, get "knocked up" and drop out of high-school at 16, expect you to pay $14K for their wedding and then move back in with you when they get divorced two years later.

A tiger isn't going to leave their stinky socks in the living room, give you any backtalk when you ask them to take the trashcans to the street, grumble about having to mow the lawn, forget to flush the toilet, burn popcorn in the microwave, or leave dirty dishes in their room.

Given a choice between a teenager or a tiger, I'd take a tiger - every single day of the week, and twice on Sunday!

    :D

Everything has a beginning and an end, from the smallest to the largest. None of us are immune from that.
