Of course not, but these are endangered animals. Every effort should have been made to ensure they survived. I can understand why they had to be killed, as obviously the town wasn't prepared for such a thing, but at the same time, its horrible that they had to be killed.

And yes, I do understand the outback.

Honestly, I couldn't care less how rural an area is.

Summary of Ohio Law on the ownership exotic animals
Summary of Law: No person may bring into the state a non-domestic animal unless the possessor: obtains an entry permit; health certificate certifying the animal is free of infectious diseases; and a certificate of veterinary inspection. Persons in the state possessing non-domestic animals do not need to obtain a permit.
This and other state laws on the subject here

If you're going to be that laxed, region doesn't matter... have the material close-by, as your laws elevate the possibility of near-death experiences with exotic animals (that may also harm other residents)... especially when this isn't the first case in the state since '03:

Don't worry. This event will cause a big change in the law. Jack Hanna is leading the effort.

They should just outlaw the private/personal ownership of exotic animals all together.

It comes down to they were released around 5 in the evening by 6 it was getting dark. When you search and try to round them up in the middle of the night when they have the advantage.. you'd shoot them too.

Yes, local law enforcement had access to tranquilizing equipment within 45-90 mins after. Columbus Zoo and a place called the Wilds are 30 miles to 60 miles away.

They tried to tranquilize some of them but it takes minutes for the effect to take place. That's enough time to maul people within 20 yards of the animal.

A vet tranqed a tiger from 15 yards and it charged him, forcing the police to kill it anyway. These animals could not be saved.

Jack Hanna, who is a better advocate for these animals than anyone here on this forum, even stated that it was impossible to let these animals roam free they had to be put down for the safety of the community.

    They did save some though..

Don't give false information as you clearly never been nowhere near it. It's rural but access to stuff is pretty easy. Columbus Zoo is 60 miles away.. The Wilds is in the same county as this incident. The Wilds is the largest wildlife conservation center in North America which works with Columbus Zoo.

If you guys want correct information.. try try 10tv

I never said otherwise. It wasn't a him, but a her. Nothing I said contradicts what Jack Hanna said.

It had to be because in Ohio anybody can own a exotic animal. The law will change within a few weeks.

Well excuse the (*)(*)(*)(*) out of me if I don't know every single wildlife sanctuary, zoo down to it's (*)(*)(*)(*)ing mile post. I swear to God dude you know some of us just go off of vague memories of (*)(*)(*)(*). I'm not going to sit there and research every last detail to post on a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing forum.

You people aren't worth that much effort IMO.

I meant the time it took to transport the tranquilizing materials. Since Ohio currently has a law that allows for exotic animals, law enforcement should have adequate training with (and speedy access to) tranquilizers.

    I don't disagree.

Dude.. you are from Ohio. You have to know Zanesville is halfway between Columbus and Wheeling. Ohio is a state of halves. You are always half way between something.

Also you mention Jack Hanna. You can't mention Jack Hanna without knowing the Columbus Zoo.

I know the Columbus Zoo, and I know The Wilds but when you have 1-2 hours a daylight remaining with a bunch of nocturnal predators running around in relatively heavily populated rural areas full of vulnerable pets that people love and kids what are you supposed to do? 60 miles might as well be 100. No, I didn't realize that Zainesville is halfway between Columbus and Wheeling. I just used my best guesstimate at the time for the thread.

If I was living out there I sure as hell wouldn't want to hear my outdoor dog getting eaten by a Bengal Tiger at 2am, shoot the (*)(*)(*)(*)er. I don't care how endangered it is, my family dog is more important than the Tiger.

I feel bad that these endangered species had to be euthanized but for some reason some people in this thread think the Tiger's life is more valuable than people or people's beloved pets. Easy to say if its not your dog, cat, or kid.

They probably had tranquilizing material within a half hour. 25 of the animals were killed before then (from what I understand). That as Sheriff and his deputies responded they had to clear the road to the home. Animals were killed that were close to getting on I-70.. or was on it.

So it's all in hindsight because to tranq an animal (wild or not) requires knowing it's weight and if you don't you could end up killing it (using too much) or even using too little and it waking up then tearing you apart.

What I do find funny since nobody here has mentioned it yet.. Jack Hanna has the same types of animals at his home just north of Columbus. But shh don't tell the media.

I am not disagreeing with the result. I am not 2nd guessing them in any manner. But I know for a fact that Columbus Zoo workers along with the Wilds workers were there within 30 mins, but that was after 25 were already dead.

Well unless you are withholding valuable information about this case, the sheriffs department has said several times now that he opened all the pens on his property before taking his own life.

I am not privvy to any new info but as an animal lover I am still have this empty feeling that something more humane couldve been done at least in some instances. The fact none of them managed to be tranquilzed or recaptured is troubling to me.

I am however glad this POS killed himself.

Several were actually recaptured, but I'm not aware of the details of how they were detained. A grizzly, a few leopards, and a tiger if I remember correctly.

Uh, no. What should have been done is quite simple (although apparently not simple enough -- who, what, can compete against hillbillies and their slugs?): call a state of emergency. Instruct everyone to remain indoors and to bring their pets with them. Bring in the appropriate personnel over night and systematically hunt the animals down, using tranquilizers. This didn't all have to be rushed.

If Fido becomes tiger food... well, I'm sorry. But there are no doubt millions of Golden Retrievers, as compared to thousands of tigers. Same with a child, honestly. A horrible tragedy, no doubt, but not worth the lives of dozens of members of an endangered species.

State issue. Most states do have fairly restrictive laws. Ohio is an exception to that.

Whoa there, say again all after "as compared to thousands of tigers."

A tiger is worth more than a human child?

I've got some news for you...99% of all species of creatures, great and small...that have ever walked, flew or swam on the Earth...are now extinct. Long before human beings were even around
species come and go...life continues as we can plainly see.

All of you "animal lovers" amaze me..

Who gives a rats patoot about a tiger when compared to the life of a child?
and I could care less if it's the last tiger on Earth...no animal is worth more than
    the life of a child...

Creatures go extinct all the time, life goes on....

You really need to get your priorities straight or accept the fact you just hate your own
    kind.
