Merkel is now seen as the defacto leader of the free world. Trump just resigned.

That being the case, God help us. They wouldn't even be capable of fighting the Turks.

American power projection is a necessity in defeating Jihadists in the Middle East. The Germans have essentially zero power projection.

American power projection is the sole reason we have Jihadists.

How much power we can project in the middle east could be seen in 2015 when we crushed teh american puppet morsi in egypt and massively supported the coup in egypt to bring general al-Sisi in power.

Merkel was hellbend to not allow the americans to push another middle eastern nation into chaos.

You know what they say about French battle rifles. Never fired, only dropped once.

Wrong. Muslims have been doing this for 2000 years. Just look at the Barbary Pirates for an example dating to before America even existed.

Nonsense. Islamism has been a powerful political force in the Middle East since the end of WW1.

You didn't do anything. The Egyptian military overthrew Morsi.

Germany was on good terms with Saddam. With Gaddafi. With Assad and Mubarak.

Germany voted against ousting of Gaddafi. Germany voted against ousting Saddam. Both nations felt into chaos.

Germany at least could prevent USA doing more harm in egypt. I´m proud for that. You know since german instaleld al-Sisi rules there Clinton and Obama are sued as war criminals there?

The coup of al-Sisi was planned by the BND. We provided weapoens, Intel, money.

1st country al-Sisi visited after he took power was Germany.

So Germany meddles in the politics and leadership of foreign nations and it's a good thing?

More reason for Germany to take on the role of world police. We will take our troops and go home now.

For the last 100+ years, Europe has needed the U.S. more than the U.S. has needed Europe.

Merkel's remarks were clearly primarily aimed at Trump.

He went to the Middle East and proclaimed that he wasn't there to lecture them.

Then he went to the G-7 summit and lectured them.

Trump's rhetoric is music to Moscow's ears.

Russia has longed for the day when the Atlantic Alliance would fall apart. It was one of the reasons why the Russians have done everything they can to fuel xenpohobic nationalist (and often pseudo facist) movements in Poland, Hungary, France, Germany, and in the United States.

A divided western world serves Putin's interests.

Merkel, heartened by Marcon's victory in France, charted this position to appeal to Germans who see their country (correctly) as the central nation in the European Union. This is a posture that will help her in her quest to beat back the xenophobes in her own country.

Putin want's to bring back the Iron Curtain.

Trump and his band of idiots will let him do it too.

Merkel will hold the German finger in the dike until the Americans can get rid if the Clown Prince.

For 75 years, the Western Alliance has been a bulwark against the spead of Russia, and has allowed the European powers and the United States to dominate the world.

Now, the xenophobes and the flat earthers want to end that and see the world divided again, even as Russia is resurgent and China is set to take a far greater role on the world stage (see One Belt on Road).

Given Putin's activities the idea that Europe is going to turn away from us is silly. Given Europe's history of crematoria world wars Mass Graves we won't allow Europe to turn away from us. We need to keep Europe under control.

But we have people here that say Germany is at no risk from Russia and that Europe doesnt need the US to provide for their defense. Which one is it?

Why? Our bases in Germany and Italy are useful, and there are a number of Eastern European countries who are far more eager to work with us.

The Germans and French have always been shaky allies. They're also not vital to our interests.

You have no interests left in Europe when EU turns away. Since Germany and France agree in this your time in Europe are over.

Since Trump aid he wont guarantee security for Poland and Baltics that is pretty much over as well.

You also could not mention points where Germany and USA can actually still work together.

Where exactly will Trump be able to follow our demands? Since thats what an alliance means. Common ideas and solutions.

The EU was created partly in order to keep Europe under control, and it has worked quite well. Only a few hundred thousand people have been killed in European wars since 1957. Wars have brought far fewer casualties in North America since that time, even including the War on Drugs..

He just said those countries not paying their fair share to NATO need to start doing that. That simple, reasonable statement has resulted in the U.S. "resigning" its world leadership and twisting knickers all over Europe.

    Mind boggling.
