An Air National Guardsman is suspected in the leak of classified Pentagon documents, with arrest imminent, sources say

Two law enforcement officials confirmed to NBC News that the suspect in the leak of dozens of Defense Department classified documents that were posted online is Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard. Officials say they have been onto him for some time and that an arrest is imminent.

Arrest made in connection with intelligence leaks, source says

member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard was arrested on Thursday in connection with the leaking of classified documents that have been posted online, according to a US official familiar with the matter.

The arrest of Jack Teixeira, 21, comes following a fast-moving search by the US government for the identity of the leaker who posted classified documents to a social media platform popular with video gamers.

I suppose what this really says about infosec is that the US fails. That such a junior person had access and both collected and then distributed these documents literally tells the story of just how insecure our DOD has become.

I suggest that the question one has to be, why? Is this another mentally unstable trans gender? or a guy who thinks he's a patriot? I suppose time will tell.

If they were onto him for a long time why didn’t they stop him from broadcasting his diggings.

Points to him hacking in and his rank does not matter it depends upon security level.

    https://freerepublic.com/focus/news/4145333/posts?page=54

"Jack Teixeira, 21, is a member of the intelligence wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, reports The New York Times.

He oversaw an online group called Thug Shaker Central where approximately 30 people - mostly young men and teens - shared a love of guns, racist memes and games."

There's also "need to know". An Air Guard E-3/E-4 didn't have a need to know a lot of that stuff.

Of course need to know is part of the granting of access to information. An E5 mess hall NCO does not have a need to know about CRYTO protocols.

Seems the ANG unit has a very serious flaw in their ComSec protocols if the Airman should not have had access to the information. Higher ups will burn for this.

He was an IT specialist. He probably didn't have access to the documents himself, but did have access to computers and accounts of people who did.

Every government worker has their own Computer Access Card (CAC) making it next to impossible to use someone else’s security clearance to access their account. Only workstations in designated secure areas can access secure information.

Not only that they have pro Putin turds and anti Ukrainian evil doers. Someone of that group altered the document to make it look like Ukrainian combat casualties are higher than reported.

Interesting account of this gaming group from one guy who could be said to have worshiped the document leaker.
Most members ignored the documents then one guy posted a few on another site and the rest is history.
There were members from Russia, Ukraine and Asia too.

;Discord member details how documents leaked from closed chat group'
'THE DISCORD LEAKS | The online group that received hundreds of pages of classified material included foreigners, members tell The Post'

    snip:

"The young member read OG’s message closely, and the hundreds more that he said followed on a regular basis for months. They were, he recalled, what appeared to be near-verbatim transcripts of classified intelligence documents that OG indicated he had brought home from his job on a “military base,” which the member declined to identify. OG claimed he spent at least some of his day inside a secure facility that prohibited cellphones and other electronic devices, which could be used to document the secret information housed on government computer networks or spooling out from printers. He annotated some of the hand-typed documents, the member said, translating arcane intel-speak for the uninitiated, such as explaining that “NOFORN” meant the information in the document was so sensitive it must not be shared with foreign nationals."

Still he violated security protocol and broke the law. Court Marshall time, reduce rank to AIRMAN BASIC, fine him and he can do IT in Leavenworth. LOL. on IT.

Yeah I agree there should be consequences, but probably less than if it was for a more nefarious motive (assuming I am correct he was just sharing it with friends to make them think he's cool). Definitely a review to see what could be done to protect against future such incidents.

IT people should not have access to anyone’s password is that what you mean? I was the System Access Coordinator for my department as an ancillary duty but I did not have their passwords and did not want to know them.
