Well it's nice to know that Mayor Mitch Landrieu is focused on the important issues......with New Orleans constantly ranked in the top 4 most crime ridden cities in the country why not spend public time, resources, money and energy removing a statue that hasn't bothered anybody in over 100 years........I'm assuming that tourists can now go to NOLA without the fear of being beaten, raped, robbed and murdered now that the 'evil' image of Robert E. Lee has been thrown in the trash.....

I wonder if they bothered to mention how much Lee was indifferent to the politics of the South and steadfastly against succession.

Or that Lee was offered the top general position first. McClellan was an afterthought.

Maybe we should move all of the black soldiers buried in Lee's front yard.

What a shame to see history being erased largely because people are too ignorant to even understand the nuances of history.

Those are some odd statues. I'm not familiar with them. I don't care for either one. The one (guitars?) looks like a leaning pile of junk. Confirmation that beauty must be in the eye of the beholder!

If you can convince the New Orleans city government, go for it.

This is simple stuff here. Times have changed, and the electorate/demographic has changed and thus the realities of who they want honored with public art. The population had been declining for over a decade even before the flood. After Katrina, the city responding to depopulation with a host of new programs, plans to reinvigorate the city. The people of New Orleans as reflected by their representatives, are entitled to decide what values they want reflected in their parks, city hall, and county court property as they try to accomplish this.

Unless you live there, its not really your problem. Your opinion of King and Lee is worth squat if you don't live there, pay taxes and vote there.

History is not under attack. The values of the community have changed to reflect a different demographic, a different time, and a different set of priorities. That means who they want honored in their municipal property will reflect social change. Its supposed to work like this.
