New simulations suggest we may be able to reopen almost everything. But only IF...

A series of simulation done independently by several technology companies, suggest that there are ways to approximate full isolation (stay at home) results. But the trick is that everybody wears a mask. And that a makeshift mask is enough so long as it's made with the proper materials.

WARNING: these are not peer-reviewed scientific studies. These are simulations. They illustrate how far saliva droplets can travel in several scenarios. Comparing different options such as people sneezing into their arm, wearing and not wearing a mask, and social distancing.
    https://www.computerworld.com/artic...zing-simulation-on-gran-turismo-software.html

Even though the Covid19 virus is too small for regular cloth masks, the fact is that, when infecting others, the virus does not travel by itself. Studies suggest that it's carried by saliva. So the trick is to stop saliva droplets. And in an everyday outside non-medical specific scenario, that can be achieved by regular cloth masks.

This video (part of the series in the above link) you can see how proper social distancing (6 feet) plus a face mask can make a real difference.

And this test shows how regular cloth masks can stop saliva droplets when you talk.

But, again, wearing a face mask protects others. It doesn't protect you. So the importance of everybody wearing a mask is paramount. If people just did this, we might be able to open the economy almost fully, and go back to a situation very similar to normal, while giving laboratories enough time to develop the vaccine.

Of course, the problem with this is that there is no guidance from the Federal government. There is nobody at the helm. Nobody to coordinate this- and transmit it to the people in a non-partisan way.

    So, bottom line... we're screwed!

I posted this exact issue on another thread. I am desperate to get the country back to work - re open the economy - get life back to as normal as we can make it. But it has to be done safely. And that is about masks. How hard is it to make them legal issue when going out of your home? It seems people are refusing on political and personal rights grounds, but if it means we can get back to our lives, why is it such a sticking point?

Because not wearing a mask doesn't necessarily mean you will infect people, especially since we have learned this virus isn't nearly as deadly as previously thought.

Being able to use your own brain, instead of listening to the government is being ignorant? Those who have the ability to think critically were able to sniff out exaggeration over this virus as early as March.

If you were told that the whole country could open back up and get back to normal - the only caveat being mask wearing - would you do it?

It is exactly as deadly as previously thought, and it is more deadly than initially thought.

Not wearing a mask doesn't necessarily mean you will infect people. It just means that the risk of it is low enough for us to open the economy.

Is there a reason why Trump loyalists want to keep the economy closed? Maybe they don't like Trump and want to undermine his administration, but they can't admit it?

It would sound good, but it would raise the issue that too much trust is being put in mask wearing.

You might wanna ask your precious CDC about that, the very CDC that said its 8-15x less deadly than estimated. There's another thread on this topic. I'm not a Trump loyalist, I just follow what the Constitution grants us that would make Fauci's head explode. The right to worship and the right to assemble. The fact we're not seeing spikes in cases from these riots proves it right there that we can have mass, concerts, packed restaurants and movie theaters, I can tell you the only people who want to stay locked down are the people who tried to lock us down in the first place. The blatant authoritarianism running rampant at the moment, on both sides.

I would say my answer is neutral, and question becomes more of why people are trusting masks so much?

That might be your question, but mine - and the one to which you responded - was about whether or not to would wear a mask if it meant that we could get this country rolling again.

Why do progressives want Trump to mandate face panties now but didn’t care about mandating them at all when people were dying of the H1N1 virus?

    Quote!

That's great. Just for reference, could you point me to any of the posts you have written condemning Trump's assault on the protester's 1st A rights?

Uhmm... you do understand that those rights can be temporarily suspended in some circumstances. Like during a health crisis, when people using them can kill people, right?

I mean, you wouldn't scream "right to worship" is the government shut down a church that was about to fall, would you? That would be nutty!

But you are also not ok with cheapening the lives of those who will die because they will be infected by insane people refuse to wear masks, right?

would these be akin to simulations that showed millions of deaths? How many times will chicken little run around screaming?

Yes! They are just as real as the simulation that showed millions of deaths if nobody had stayed at home, no masks, and idiots like Trump would have managed to somehow keep the pandemic secret.

As a matter of fact, the number of dead world wide, if nobody had done anything, would be over half a billion people (billion... with a "b"). Almost double the whole population of the United States. If the world were all governed by idiots like Trump that's about the number of people who would have died. Your chances of dying would have increased one hundred fold. We are grateful that only the U.S. has to deal with an idiot like Trump.

    It is working in Japan
    https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2.../masks-helped-fight-coronavirus/#.XuK9t8p_WhA

Japan SHOULD have been hit worse - everything was in place for it to be a disaster. Older vulnerable population, high density cities but it did not get there

    Reason

Wearing a mask is considered “polite” so a LOT do so and it cut the viral spread

i realize you feel the need to be led by the hand every step of your life and you probably think that your particular situation is the predominant one throughout the country, but this is a huge nation and circumstances vary. in my neck of the woods the wuhan flu has been only about half-again as lethal as the seasonal flu and the infection rate, once you discount the panic, is about equal to its seasonal cousin. in urban areas, with lemmings existing cheek to jowl, the infection rate is going to climb. where poverty and ignorance abound, once again we're looking predominantly at those urban areas, both the lethality and infection rate will climb. so, do you think the reaction in both sorts of places should be the same? of course not, so why on earth should there be a national standard? this is precisely the collectivist/corporatist reaction we've come to expect from big government statists. the solution for new york city is going to be completely different than the solution for butte. the solution for los angeles is going to be different than the solution for the imperial valley and the local authorities in each of these regions should be the ones to provide those solutions. i understand your desperate need to blame the current administration for your every inconvenience, but running to the federal government and demanding a nation sized band-aid is the height of idiocy.

the president tried the calm, "this too shall pass" approach and you attacked him for it. he then caved in to the drones and agreed that a shut-down was in order, but this only gave y'all the chance to start calling it "the trump shut-down". now he is baldly stating that the economy must open back up or it will die and you can hardly wait to call him a mass murderer. i sometimes worry about the sanity of today's left wing malcontents. no, that's not true. i've long since quit worrying and have passed into being sadly amused.

Well, until we get new leadership

What is it now, 6 months?

Or we can all die to satisfy a raving loony because we think Salma Hayek is an inferior human being.
