Then the less tax you collect for the problems you wish to correct.

That's the way it works. The object is to provide a disincentive to consumption. It can backfire if people simply redirect funds targeted for other consumption, but it generally works.

Do you remember when the left was pushing for electric cars real hard and then passed tax incentives for those who bought them? Yea, the unintended consequence of that was the gas tax revenue fell. Ooops! They quickly abandoned that!

all carbs release insulin, grains included

slowly drink a sugary fruit drink all day long and you are continually raising your insulin, same with snacking

what you eat is as important as how often you eat, the body needs to be low on insulin to turn fat into energy, it's the way the body works

too many re-feed every couple hours to satisfy carb withdraw, rather then let their body use their own fat for energy

Not a real good analogy. A better one would be from a scene out of Soylent Green.

[after smoking a cigarette at a party] You know if I had the money I would smoke two... three of these every day.

There is a point where cost prohibits consumption by all but the wealthy, even with addictions, which junk food can be classified as.

I'm sure the drop in gas tax revenue was expected, even seen as a sign of success.

One reason, people used to get out more.

Children these days sick around all day glued to the iPad or online game screen, or FaceBook.

When I was a kid, we considered our selves lucky actually if we rode our bikes up, and the basketball court or baseball diamond was free of other kids. Our high tech sedentary, indoor lifestyles are making people fat

when I grew up, there was not as many snacks as today or sugary drinks (and not as many grain based processed foods)

sugar is half fructose and that is the big part of the issue, as that is process by the liver the same as alcohol, just with alcohol you stop when you get drunk, this is why people get nonalcoholic fatty liver... the fructose

maybe they should of called them

    alcoholic fatty liver
    and
    fructose fatty liver

ask farmers how they fatten up animals

The issue is having to legislate it.

You support a nanny state government because you can't control your urges?

Maybe while we are at it we can legislate the liberal rag mags at the checkout as well.

I agree with need balance. But we aren't close to balance when it comes to obesity. 2/3 of the population is overweight and obese and its getting worse every year. This problem needs to be addressed like alcohol, drugs, and smoking were.

Why should I take your response seriously? I did not write this bill or law or whatever it is, but it's not a bad idea. It certainly could help and doesn't hurt anyone other than ideologues hell-bent on anything anti-government.

Your payroll tax dollars is paying for healthcare for the elderly and low income. Obesity is adding hundreds of billions to our healthcare cost, and we don't even fully understand all the healthcare problems it causes yet, and I'm convinced its a lot more than that.

Also, look at your insurance premiums. They pay for everyone in your healthcare pool, probably your employer's. These rates are based on the actual expenses insurance companies have to pay. Obesity adds cost to the healthcare system.

If we all ate right, stopped smoking, limited drinking, stopped doing drugs, exercised, and followed common sense preventative health practices, our healthcare bills would be slashed.

That is the lifestyle I try to live. I don't smoke. Most people my age don't. I only drink socially. People with any common sense do that. I go on runs and really enjoy them. I see my dentist, try to maintain good ergonomics at my programming job, wear sunscreen when its really hot out, do my doctor visits, that kind of stuff.

When it comes to food, I make healthy recipes that are actually really delicious and taste better than that processed fast food garbage. But every week or two I'll have something fun. at least thats the plan. I try to eat reasonable portions and not binge but thats hard. Its hard to be disciplined when our brains are made to crave certain foods and companies have made this processed food that is basically crack to our brains.

Really? Do you really want to deal with all the health issues than come with the second half of your life because you didn't take care of yourself? You can still have a fun life but it doesn't have to be 100% about food, smoking, sedentary living, and drinking. You can have some of that, but you can also hike, hang out with people, stuff like that. I actually find running and working out to be fun.

And yet Asians have always consumed insanely sweet drinks/deserts, and eat white rice all day long. Not many obese people, and some Asian groups are among the longest lived and healthiest on the planet.

Your argument fails just on a single comparison of average diet + weight. Compare Japan to America, for example:

upload_2020-9-26_12-19-33.jpeg Mainly white rice, with small piece of fish, and the rest vegetables. Japanese people are healthier, thinner, and live longer than Americans. Now let's look at a typical American meal of this type (portable lunch):

[IMG] I guarantee it's NOT the bun causing all the problems. It's the absurd amount of meat and cheese.

But “living” is subjective. Some people don’t want to look like a bag of s h i t so they exercise and eat healthy. Yes, we’re all going to die but we don’t have to accelerate the timetable by living unhealthy or look disgusting while we’re still above ground. But if that’s what you choose they rock on. I’d rather exercise and eat healthy but also enjoy sweets and beer in moderation. Moderation is a foreign word to most people in the US given what a fat f u c k nation we are. Sad.

Very difficult to get good enjoyment out of life when you're effectively disabled by poor health/fitness. It significantly limits what you can do, and how much of it you can do.

Japanese women used to look like this...

With the introduction of Western culture and food, and other things, they now look like this...

The Japanese rarely drank dairy prior to WW2. Our USA milk is spiked! Is that good or bad? I dunno.............

they eat plenty of meat and low carb vegetables, they eat very little grain and sugars

once you are overweight, the only way to lose weight is to cut the carbs...

the problem with that burger is the bun, not the burger (and the fries that come with it soaked in seed oils)

meat and cheese is not the problem (btw, that is not really cheese on that burger, just like margarine is not really butter)

I say eat your meat and vegetables

cut down on grains, sugars\fruits (due to the fructose and insulin issues)

also avoid heavily processed seed oils

I actually know a lot of Japanese people. They don't eat a lot of sweet stuff. In fact many of them can't stand American treats because they are too sweet. They do eat rice, but they also eat fish and vegetables with that rice and rice is only a part of their diet. It is worth to mention that a lot of Asian countries are seeing a rise in obesity due to plentiful rice and more westernized diets. I'm sure they will be in our boat in a few generations.

Very difficult to determine without having all of the facts laid out bare before us. It would appear that milk may lead to sullen voluptuousness whereas a lack of it may have led to a happy cup of tea with much less back stress.

In any case I now want a double quarter pounder with cheese from Mickey Ds And Bacon.

    And a Baskin Robbins milkshake

    With malt powder.

4 tbl spoons of Carnation malt.

All followed up by a double of some Pappy Van Winkle 21 y old bourbon.
