Why don't we just burn all the history books and documentaries and other records prior to 1963? Let's not have any celebrations or party themes because someone is going to be offended for the least offensive things.

Principal Apologizes To Black Students Over 'Party Like It's 1776' Prom Theme

A New Jersey principal apologized to minority students for the phrase “party like it’s 1776” imprinted on tickets to the school’s upcoming senior prom to be held at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

Constitution Heritage Act of 1988 to "disseminate information about the United States Constitution on a nonpartisan basis in order to increase the awareness and understanding of the Constitution among the American people.Cherry Hill High School East Principal Dennis Perry sent a letter to students, parents and other community members Friday apologizing for the “insensitive” wording that led to complaints from African-American and minority students. Perry said it was “irresponsible” for he and other prom organizers to overlook the historical fact that “not all communities can celebrate what life was like in 1776,” a time of slavery in America. The American Revolutionary War theme for the event was intended to pair with the National Constitution Center venue, which was established after President Ronald Reagan signed the Constitution Heritage Act of 1988 to "disseminate information about the United States Constitution on a nonpartisan basis in order to increase the awareness and understanding of the Constitution among the American people."

But the message missed the mark with several minority students at Cherry Hill High School East, prompting the prom apology.

“Today, I learned that members of our school community were offended by a statement written on our Senior Prom ticket,” Dr. Dennis Perry wrote in the Friday letter. “I especially apologize to our African American students, whom I have let down by not initially recognizing the inappropriateness of this wording. You can expect that we will do better as a school community to produce well thought out, appropriate communications.”

According to the most recent state education data, the Cherry Hill, New Jersey school in Camden County lists that 6.2 percent of its students are black, 62.2 percent of the school is white and 22.4 percent of the student body identifies as Asian. The public school had 2,177 students during the 2015-16 school year, with the school’s Hispanic population at just shy of 6 percent of the overall student body.

It said that minority students had complaints. Ok, well they weren't considered people 1776 so what was there for non-whites to celebrate at that time? Civil Rights, for ex, for non-whites didn't occur til over a century later.

Many black men fought in the revolutionary war.

They apparently felt that there was something to fight for and maybe even to celebrate.

But todays whiny snowflakes **** on the memory of those men.

 

I can't celebrate what it's like to be black or being part of black history, so we're going to do away with Black History Month, right?

The funny part is that it's likely that 30-40% of the white kids probably cannot track their heritage back to America in 1776.

To me, this is an overreaction on the part of anybody who complained... When your prom is being held at the National Constitution Center in Philly (whatever that is), it sounds like 1776 would be a logical target to celebrate...

Personally, I think the motto was a little cute...

Anyway, what of the other non-whites that complained? Why is this thread oddly focused on so-called black people when other non-white groups complained.

Are you telling me that non blacks own BET? That's absolutely hysterical, the irony of probably white people owning something black is just off the charts.

 

In this country it's the history.

 

The USA was founded as a deeply racist state, even by the standards of the day. If you can't handle that fact, don't look too hard at US history. Criticism is a normal and legitimate response to that history.

Pick a theme that's not offensive to someone.

 

In Africa their history is capturing and selling blacks, but no one ever wants to talk about that.

How about a tennis theme where the white kids wear white gift bags with eyeholes?? I seem to recall this was considered an OK look by some...
