Not necessarily Mak. For instance, one of the best era films was Breaker Morant, an Australian production. It's one of my favorites and I've watched it probably a dozen times. Another excellent movie is Slum Dog Millionaire which was produced in India. I try and keep an open mind and not concern myself with who produced the movie but instead critique the movie for the quality of the plot line and acting.
There are a few quirky Australian movies which have become cult classics. The Castle is just one. Others like The Dish and The Nugget are great entertainment. I think Red Dog will follow suit.
Breaker Morant is about the Boar War in S. Africa and how Australian soldiers were unfairly accused of violating orders, then executed by the British. You'll like it and dislike the British.
A few of my fav OZ films...(not mentioned yet, loved Breaker/Castle etc) The Odd Angry Shot - Graham Kennedy (and many many others) The Sum of Us - Jack Thompson and Russel Crow Bad Boy Bubby - Nick Cave Mad Max 1 & 2! Ya gotta love Max! One of the best OZ productions i recon was the ABC mini series Blue Murder, about the notorius corruption in the NSW police force in the 70's/80's. Still banned in NSW i believe? Every country produces good and bad.
Should be. You'd have to look up ABC shops in OZ i recon? The ABC is a largely goverment funded TV/Radio station. You'd recon they'd have some sort of mail out/internet thingy going on? Grab a copy. names names, pull no punches, cuts in real life interviews with some of our best know reporters. I think it was the Warren Commission into the NSW Police Force that uncovered the corruption. Criminals like Neddy Smith, Chris Flannery, Detective Sgt Roger Rogerson. Great show - only 3-4 episodes? Haven't watched it for many years.
Underbelly springs to mind. Brilliant series and based on true events. Watching the series, I could remember news stories almost identical to what was shown in the series.
Funny thing about that movie. It's set in the north west of WA in the 1970s, and nobody in the pub smokes. LOL EVERYONE in the northwest in the '70s smoked.
When was the last time you saw anyone smoking in an Aussie movie??? It is illegal to show people smoking http://www.tobaccoinaustralia.org.a...-5-tobacco-advertising-legislation-violations
No it's not illegal to show someone smoking in a movie, or on TV. The ABC has plenty of shows where people smoke. Off the top of my head, just recently, The Slap and that BBC thing with Collin Firth and Jessica Biel both had people smoking. They probably didn't show it in Red Dog because it is supposed to be a family friendly movie. And no, Red Dog is way better than Eight Below. The acting was pretty terrible in that movie, not to mention the bad special effects. The dogs didn't have much character either. Plus there's no way sled dogs would survive for 6 months alone either. It was too Disney and too hollywood. My favourite movie for ages when I was a kid was White Fang. But Red Dog is way, way better.
