Singer Macy Gray argues US needs a 'new flag' to replace 'tattered, dated, divisive' Old Glory

The American flag is "tattered, dated, divisive, and incorrect" and needs to be updated, singer Macy Gray argued this week in an op-ed written for Juneteenth.


But the piece, published Thursday by MarketWatch, received a quick rebuke from a few prominent conservatives.

The five-time Grammy nominee's article appeared the same day President Bidensigned a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the 1860s.

She argued that Old Glory has "replaced" the Confederate flag, implying it is a symbol of racism.

"It no longer represents ALL of us," Gray wrote. "It’s not fair to be forced to honor it. It’s time for a new flag."

She went on to say a new flag should have 52 stars, with the new pair representing Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.

She claimed both the U.S. territory in the Caribbean and the nation's capital city deserve statehood and that the supposed purity and innocence represented by the flag's white stripes is a fallacy.

"America is great," she wrote. "It is beautiful. Pure, it ain’t. It is broken and in pieces."

It sickens me that some do not respect old glory, the symbol of our exceptional nation. I think that it should stay exactly as it is. We can add stars when there is no partisan consensus to add states. The colors of the stars should never change.

 

To deny the basic goodness of the nature of our country and to want to change its stripes is to deny everything that America is and has ever stood for.

Who cares about what Macy Gray (who is completely irrelevant and hasn't had a hit song since 1999) cares about anything?

I can just see Fox thinking:

"Hey, some irrelevant singer who hasn't had a hit song since the last century just wrote an Op-Ed. Sounds like good material for today's mock outrage article"

She is entitled to her opinion, and (in terms of any sort of relevance) her opinion means nothing.

The only real "takeaway" from this article is the increasing desperation of Fox in their search for Daily Outrage material.

 

Because it is news about what she said about our flag and her remarks made the news.

 

If she wrote an article expressing her views it would be opinion. A report about a public figure making comments about the flag of our country is news. The difference is obvious. Yesterday i seeded an article by President Trump regarding his opinion on CRT. It was in the opinion section. Had I found and seeded an article by a reporter reporting about what President Trump had said regarding the CRT news issue, it would have been here.
Also, Fox News is very good at listing its opinion articles as such within the link to their articles. No such listing here.

I don't know why this topic is worth discussing though. Everybody has the right to their own opinions.

 

The flag may have a few extra stars now, but it's the same flag that was flown during the war to end slavery. Or is she saying that the Civil War was about state's rights and the Union was also racist?

I was always highly patriotic and placed great value on the flag. But after trump was elected and his abuse of the flag as a symbol, and after trump and his cult placed the flag above rights of humans, the sight of the flag now sickens me. I believe in true American values but my flag has been bastardized as a symbol of trumpism by people like you.

That I am sickened just by the sight of the flag is 100% because of trump and his cult.

In Luke 17:26-30, Jesus compares the evil end of the age to the "days of Noah" and "days of Lot." In both of those Biblical examples, evildoers had passed the point of no return and God intervened.

But on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all. So will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

Lesson number one the flag belongs to all Americans, all cities and states within its borders, all races, religions, and all political parties. It stands for "We the People" not "we some of the people.
