I love hearing about yalls life in small towns or rural areas. Except for a couple of years when I lived on 17 acres (with spiders and scorpions and trantulas) I've always preferred the big city. Not saying Id pass up a little cottage on a lake right now, but so far, that's not happening.

All that to say, I enjoy the daily visual stimulants.. like today there was a well built, but short, young black guy who took his shirt off at the train station and was posing... sharing various views of his six pack abs and bulging arms. I didn't look at him until I passed by and could look back so he couldn't see me. Entertainment til the Train arrived.

Then on the ride home, snuck a pic of this tired gentleman. (Note the miles on those shoes)

Felt safe though. Who wouldn't? ;)

My concern about that is that those vertical boards will rot from the bottom up if they are left in contact with the ground. I would feel better if there was a pressure treated board in contact with the ground and the vertical boards just above it.

This is a picture of my old fence I'm going to rebuild next year. Notice what happened to the boards touching the ground vs the boards not against the ground.

    fence10.JPG

Same fence, boards down to the ground. I probably stuck that piece of concrete there a long time ago to block critters. Didn't do any good.

    fence 11.JPG

This is a fence I built probably 25 years ago or more with a pressure treated board at the bottom that the boards are nailed to. The boards show their age but they are not rotted like the ones above. The dark color is not rot. It's just wet from recent rain.

Yeah. They'll rot on the inside, where they were cut. I'm counting on the outside quarter inch, or so, staying solid (It is pressure treated, but the inside will rot because of the cuts.).

They'll last quite a long time before it becomes a problem, though. Someday the next owner of your property may have to do some digging and replace those vertical boards, but I doubt that you will have to. After I rebuild that back fence next year, I am quite certain all of my fences will outlive me. Haha, hope the next owner appreciates all the work. Next year I'll have to show you guys my gradual progress on that fence. I guarantee you I have no intention of trying to do it all in a few days. I'll probably deconstruct and reconstruct one 8 foot panel at a time, after which time it'll be beer time. Like I said, I ain't 34 anymore .... :oldman:

Anyways, aside from that one concern, it looks good, and it's going to look even better when they install the top part.

Would Trex work as a platform for a wood fence? How does it hold up when in contact with the ground?

You can buy borate and paint it on several inches up, and over the raw cut edges. It helps slow the the rot down.

I watched the video, and the stuff looks flimsy. I assume it doesn't rot, but I wouldn't use it for that. It's pretty amazing how well a pressure treated 2x6 will hold up against the ground over many years.

But until the Twelfth of Never is a "long long time".

Trex should cut me a check for this. ;-)

Yes, the stuff does look flimsy - there goes my pay day.

I went to a locally-owned building supply store yesterday. Trex makes fence rails that I wanted to see and they're a retailer for that company.

They're not impressed by theTrex brand of decking material.

I am not impressed with any decking material. Everything deteriorates and requires maintenance. Maintenance free = after death.
But a guy can dream - right? ;-)

Life is not about what you 'want' to do, but what needs be done for the continuation of life: yours, or others.
Doing things you 'want' to do is to make the above journey more pleasant.

Well, you have to marry the right woman, but I would still rather let the fence posts rot until they drop - or longer.
