I have a technical question I have pondered for awhile about the virtue of planting onions not fully buried. I have seen youtube gardeners do it that way you have where part of the bulb is above the ground. My question is why do you do it that way? It seems to me that fully burying the bulb would keep it from sunburning/freezing and not fully burying them would make them flop over. I bury my onions about an inch and a half at least underground and have never had a problem with them. I am just not sure why people do it the other way.

It can get down on the teens here in winter and it would seem that the winter onions would be more at risk for freezing being shallow and in the summer it can hover around 100 give or take so it seems like the summer onions would burn/scorch being shallow.

    Just curious.

I did mine way early. Since I was getting a federal refund, I filed them immediately electronically. Since I was paying even more into the state, I waited until the last hour of the last day and dropped them bad boys in the snail mail so I could hold onto my additional $43 an extra long time just for spite.

I would first find out if you would plant long day or short day onions. Then find out when to plant them. I started mine from seed in December. I got yellow granex and Texas sweet onions. I plant them deep enough to cover the bulbs at least. Wild onions can grow pretty deep. These are the granex. The same seed they plant in Vidalia Georgia.I pulled some weeds and fed some Miracle Grow but other than that I haven't done anything to them. An old woman once told me to pull the dirt from around the bulbs to make them grow bigger but I think that is an old wives tale. What you need is good soil. Good sun .... Good water... Good climate... Etc...

If you ive near a peanut mill you should try peanut hulls for mulching.

We have havested a few potatoes and some green beans. We are going to do the big harvest in a week or so on the potatoes. The corn is coming along ok could be better.
The chicken got in the garden and messed up the cucumbers and squash..who would have thought a chicken could do that much damage.
My neighbors have a gorgeous garden they don't have a big garden but it is so neat. They used peanut shells for mulch and there wasn't t a weed to be seen. It will be something to try one year.

I have really good luck with goat hay. I buy at least one roll every year for winter. The goats waste a lot of it and it packs down. They also do other stuff in it. It breaks down into black sticky soil in no time. I always have some weeds. When they take over I run the goats in.

Do you normally get a lot of figs?
My fig trees lived. I wasn't sure they were going to make it through the winter. We wrapped them up really well but we had a storm that had high winds and snow and the tarp was a problem. Lesson learned. But in spite of that they leafed out and not much dead wood to trim off.
I'm making a deck garden. So far I planted lettuce, spinach, cilantro, basil, string beans, cucumbers and chard. I also started the pumpkins and zucchini to transplant and planted some corn. No tomatoes yet. Im going to buy them. Next year I will start some. I also have some milkweed started for the butterflies and forget me nots. I still have a bunch of seed to plant. Im loading up the deck with plants so when we sit out there we will be in a garden and not sitting on a stage.

One of my painting buddies likes to paint in Monets style with wet in wet backgrounds and hazy foregrounds.
Have you ever thought of taking up painting?

Your deck will be a paradise this summer it is so relaxing to have a lot of plants around.
It was a hope that the fig would have more fruit than last year.

What is your problem you have no limited abilities.. You want to swim the English channel while painting now that would be limiting your abilities. I am impressed and so are others. Your paintings are very good.
Maybe you are in a thinking mode right now.
How about a spring woodsy scene? Or a farm scene, a mountain scene, a field scene, pasture scene. I have almost 10 thousand photo. Bridge scenes.
