Presidential elections are always popularity contests. People with the ability to do the job really well either won't have anything to do with the process or are not popular enough. It has been this way all my life.

My dad used to vote Republican for president and democrat for senate. Not sure about congress since it's the lower house but it's called checks and balances. Look it up. I vote straight ticket usually though.

I'm sorry, I went to a very good public school starting in the mid fifties. My parents and many others raised a lot of money through PTA to make that school a success. That was before teacher unions and Dept. of education. I don't know how you would call that "Socialism". Today, quality education is taught through home schools and charter schools. I only wish I had been permitted to keep and invest the money I put into SS. Of course you say, how could it be guaranteed I would invest it. To that I would say I owe you or no government how I spend my own money. Many roads have been built privately. They are called "toll roads".Road construction hardly fits under the Socialist banner. There is an end however to government intervention.
