Too bad California Governor and Mayors would rather pay for free health care of illegal immigrants instead of paying their taxpaying and underplayed teachers.

I hear the "Surf Nazis" still exist in PV and make it clear that Bluff Cove is their turf.

Surfers who live in PV have always been territorial.

You say you grew up in PV during the 50's.

I remember PV during the 50's, there were even a few wild horses around.

Every 20 years unions should clean house and rid itself of commies and the Mafia.

I see the socialist have gotten involved in the teachers strike.

I also learned yesterday that "tacos" represent socialism.

It can be done but those who make that amount cannot live close to where they work due to the high housing costs resulting from in part the open space restrictions on building housing. I worked in a senior engineering capacity in silicon valley back in the 80's a d 90's. Some of the younger guys with families who were making good money had to buy houses in the Sacramento valley and spend 5 hours a day in their cars. That's what D policies result in. And very few can figure this out.

The main problem with the CA budget is that it takes a ever increasing percentage of that budget to pay the retirement benefits to retired public employees.

There are only 180 days of instruction in the LAUSD school calendar (that's 25 weeks, each with a 2-day weekend), add 50 Saturdays and Sundays and you've got 230 natural days from the start of the school term to its end (32 weeks). With 4 weeks in the average month this works out to about 8 months and a few days.

You are using old math !!!

They don't teach mathematics in California public schools today.

Unless you send your children to a charter school.

In the past few days I have learned that the average LAUSD teacher makes just over $70,000 per year (8 months) and when you add on all of the benefits like free healthcare including dental and vision for life and a pretty nice pension for life the average LAUSD teacher is actually making $112,000 per year (8 months)

The striking teachers are also demanding new hires like full time librarians and nurses for each of the LAUSD 1,147 schools.

Actually it's the union who's demanding it because the librarians and nurses would have to pay union dues.

I wondering when the striking teachers will be demanding a taco truck on every LAUSD school yard ?

Teacher unions don’t care about students.

But but but every election year the unions are asking for more tax increases and bond initiatives for education claiming "it's for the children" but none of the new tax revenues actually is spent in the classrooms.

My kids went to charter schools. All of their assignments, homework, and tests are done on their laptop computer. No grading, no more "My dog ate my homework" and almost no paper.

180/5=36 ... 36 weeks. The point remains that teachers work more than the days of instruction and spend many hours--weekends, summers, and so forth--preparing lessons, grading papers, and so forth.

Your comment suggests you aren't knowledgeable about teaching and what the job entails.

Anyway, it isn't a matter of what we think about the job--easy (more days off), hard (kids are jerks), or whatever--it's about the supply-and-demand for teachers. The fact is we don't pay enough to attract computer, trades, math, and science instructors.

I am knowledgeable about teaching and what the job entails, was a High School Social Studies teacher for the New York City Board of Education (taught at the Edgar R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn). I know what "lesson plans are" (most teacher materials offer suggested models, its just an outline to write on the board). Grading papers is part of the job, but teachers are provided time to do this in their schedules. Good teachers will invariably invest more time reviewing and commenting on their students' work, preparing inventive lessons and engaging their students, but few teachers are that good. This is an old issue, the quality of education imparted is deplorable, some of this could be due to lack of adequate resources and compensation, but a lot has to do with un-removable indolent teachers.

In this strike the Charter school teachers are also involved by striking. A double whammy for the school district to have all but parochial/ private schools closed.

Yes. My son goes to an independent charter school. Teachers and staff are not involved in the LAUSDs labor negotiations.

We need more of these schools. Competition can only help students

Good to know you. Your posts suggest you are a Republican living in LA. I especially enjoy interacting with Californians because we know we can't BS each other. All the yahoos outside the state post juvenile [poop] hate for everything California; they are silly.

I am not a Republican, but I grew up here and have firsthand knowledge of our poor school system. 2 of my kids were having trouble in school and I was told they would have to repeat a grade. I moved them to a charter school and both graduated early. We don't need to throw more money at poor results. We need more competition.

I agree that all education venues deserve necessary funding and look forward to when junior college is free.

No, they do not all deserve funding. They deserve audits and performance based funding. Why do people demand results for their money unless its from the government? Free college cannot exist.

The government is us. Your mayor is speaking to you. Californians have been voting for higher taxes for the longest time esp on the rich. You aren't living in Tulsa you know.

You are unfortunately correct. The high taxes may be intended to get more from the rich, but the middle takes most of the damage. It is good for the Dems to have their own petri dish to show what happens under their control.
