Remember, it is not really about "science". It is a book about how science is all about perspective and that "rules" do not apply as everybody sees "science" differently. Written by somebody who is not even a scientist, but a "science philosopher". In other words, a bullshit book that says basically "there are no rules, believe what you want".
Giere was a physicist, that's what drew him to philosophy and that's not what he said. This is simple, unlike most things. What I keep seeing is antiques, Giere is contemporary, or close to it. But this new stuff is hard, because (like Pragmatists) he is saying philosophical things using non-philosophical language. Being a tough nut to crack, most of you can't do it. The only guy I've seen that maybe could, doesn't want to. I certainly don't blame him for that, but that does leave us at an impasse.
Not really. He did get his BA and MA in physics, but from what I could learn he never worked in the field. He remained in college until he got his PhD, which was in Philosophy. He then joined the History and Philosophy department of Oberlin College, where he spent the remainder of his career teaching philosophy. Of course, by your definition "The Science Guy" is also a Scientist, even though he spent most of his career as a comic and other failed entertainment ventures until he stumbled into one that made him famous. If that is your definition, I guess Dolph Lundgren is a scientist also as he holds an MS in Chemistry.
So, what you're saying is that his **** doesn't stink. Not so much. Language, be it "philosophical" or not, is intellection, that is, a human being's take on Reality, aka, bullshit. If you would consider changing your sentence to read, intellectual v. non-intellectual, then you would be getting warmer and much closer to the truth.
It is my experience that the most intellectually retarded as those who the most "education." What you might learn in school [or through your own research] is nothing compared with your life experience. Paying attention [awareness] is the most important skill to cultivate in life.
I am not attacking anybody. It's just an observation. I have a doctorate degree myself. If you have ever become involved with a professional organisation, you might understand what I am saying. Education means little. It's how you use your education that is meaningful. COVID is a perfect example of how "educated" folks act and what "educated" people do when they perceive their interests are contrary to the public's interest. They sell-out...just like they ALWAYS have.
Now that's an odd thing to say. Attacking the Messenger is improper argumentation. Which you should know..
Thanks for the conversation. Next time, say something. Your opinions about the propriety of my arguments do not interest me.
