On the early morning of June 22, 1941, the Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front
that stretched for 1,800 miles, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union began. The Nazi
high command was extremely confident, expecting the total collapse of Stalin's Russia within six weeks.

No, it is known there as well. I guess it is not taught in Russia though, probably along the lines of massive numbers of peace loving Germans emigrating to escape Fascism and Capitalism.

"Unknown war" is a figure of speach, meant to say that this particular video has some previously unknown/not mentioned facts/events desribed in it. I understand, this is too hard and complicated for an average westerner. You, probably, should stick to "top 10" youtube videos. Right, Mushroom?

Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front
    that stretched for 1,800 miles,

I was thinking about the Romanian, Italian, Hungarian and other Axis troops that were part of those 4.2 million- and thinking- I don't think they were all 'crack troops'

But perhaps its because I know about this 'unknown war'.

I guess we are just too simple- we actually read the words in the post, and took it at face value.

So what is unknown that the video's tell us about? I am all for learning more about this unknown war, that I have been reading about for over 30 years.

"The Unknown War" is an international Soviet-British-USA documentary television project that was released in 1978.
The film tells the participation of the USSR in World War 2 and is designed for Western audiences, for which events on the Eastern Front were as "unknown war".

I am still not sure what the point of this thread is.

Is it an advertisement for this documentary series from 1978?

Do you think that this is still the 'unknown war' - even though the series aired 35 years ago?

That is only your private problem. I don't care if you still not sure what the point of this thread is. If you will make thread about Mickey Mouse then I must see the sense of your thread ? Of course not. Internet is a free country.

Don't you even know what the point of your thread is?

If I start a thread labeled "the Unknown Animated Character" and its about Mickey Mouse, I would expect someone to ask me why I consider Mickey Mouse to be 'unknown'.

But I am fine with letting this thread die in obscurity.

Not sure why you are refering to me. For me to reference a video is a rare thing, unless I am making fun of somebody.

This is still a 35 year old documentary. So nothing really new here at all.

Some of the finer details in this series(I've watched the first two so far) were indeed unknown to me, but that's because I've never studied this aspect of WWII in any great detail before.

One thing I do find a little bit interesting is how this series, created during a time when the Cold War was still very much a reality, paints the Russian forces and people in a very positive and heroic light. Not that it shouldn't, or that they don't deserve it, I just think it's odd that a western documentary portrays it in that manner.

As much as Smolensk was fought over, one would think the OP would have known about that war.

Anybody who knows jack about military history knows about the war on the eastern front.

    The dreaded Eastern Front.
Just saying the words put a cold chill down the back of Colonel Klink.

I glad to see that you learned the history somehow for yourself to make some delusional conclusion.Your problem is that war was not your war

That's sort of the whole point though. You'd be surprised how many Americans still think that WWII was mainly fought in France and the Pacific and the Americans won it. The Americans lost 405,000 in all theatres. The Russians lost TWENTY MILLION. To this day it's difficult to find even one Russian family that didn't lose one or more members in it. The Russians don't even call it WWII, they call it the Great Patriotic War and they're largely right. WWII was really a titanic conflict between Germany and Russia with a few minor branches everywhere else

Agreed, but you'd still be surprised at the number of people in the West who don't know the extent of Russian sacrifices. Quick, what was the largest battle of WWII? (and many historians say its real turning point) Highlight for answer and give yourself points if you didn't look it up

Kursk, a combined tank, infantry and air battle involving well over a million men on either side. Kursk is entirely in Russia and nobody but Russians and Germans fought in it
