The West fears Russia is about to attack Ukraine. But that's not the way Russians are seeing it on TV

(CNN)Foreign forces bristling with weapons are rolling toward the Ukrainian border. Reconnaissance planes streak overhead. Rumors of "false flag" operations run rampant.

If you're watching state TV in Moscow, you're seeing video of troops and tanks, barbed wire and snipers taking aim, but it's not Russia's forces that are poised for attack -- it's NATO's.

Welcome to Russia's mirror-image depiction of the showdown over Ukraine. In the country's alternate media landscape, NATO forces are carrying out a plan that's been in the works for years: Encircle Russia, topple President Vladimir Putin and seize control of Russia's energy resources.

    ... https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/25/europe/ukraine-nato-russia-coverage-tv-media-cmd-intl/index.html

You can see clearly why Putin has taken such extensive control over Russian media and why they've cracked down so hard on independent journalists and outlets. They want their narrative to dominate. Putin is operating like the KGB officer that he once was. At heart and in the membrane, he will always be one too, on top of being a modern Soviet Premier and Russian Tsar rolled into one.

Does the Russian government have tight control of the internet?

This is another reason to resist regulation of the internet no matter what party pushes it.

It is controlled in the same way as in other countries, except, perhaps, China. Here is a screenshot from the discussion of those who don't really like Putin (or don't like him at all)

The article in this case is called "What does Putin really want?"
    comments:
    1) enrich HIMSELF and his FRIENDS...
    2) I want him to disappear. Just disappeared and not to hear anything about him.
    3) Pukin?! He wants an olive (bullet) in a pumpkin (head). Which year is already asking for it.

Russians are fed $hit and kept in the dark.....just like 100 yrs back.

70% of Russkis live at or below poverty line...almost 40 mln have no toilets or adequate plumbing....25% of Russia population would leave tomorrow for better opportunities elsewhere....and that 25% is all those between ages of 18-35 yrs of age.

There is a difference between the truth and propaganda, which is basically lies. So is it the Russians that are the liars, or is it us? A little common sense here.

What I see are American bases surrounding the Russian Federaton, I don't see Russian bases around us, do you? I also see that we're the ones supplying arms to Eastern Europe, I don't see the Russians piling up arms in Cuba or Venezuela, do you? Although the way we're going they will - and soon.

I also see that it's our ships that are having war games thousands of miles away in the Black Sea - which legally is a closed sea. Do you see Russian ships in the Gulf of Mexico, I don't?

Maybe the American people should wake up, before we end up like Nazi Germany. They were also predators in WWII, and wanted to grab Russia's wealth. Well, you saw what happened to them.

Sometimes I wonder if our government thinks we're all idiots.

    From The Article:
De-escalation appears to be accelerating over the Ukraine crisis given a number
of rapid developments which have seen lead NATO countries break from the
more bellicose and threatening tone of the United States and UK. After Germany's
neutrality toward the Russia-Ukraine crisis became apparent, Sweden is the latest
to follow its lead of forbidding arms transfers to Kiev, while Croatia is out with a firm
statement saying it will recall all of its troops from NATO in the event of war.

People in Russia get very real prison sentences for things like questioning annexation of Crimea on social media.

I don’t know, but I’d think people would have less trust in a government that is so afraid of freedom of speech, that it puts people in prisons for wrong social media posts.

Which country has amassed over 100,000 soldiers along Ukraine's borders? Which national leader insists that Ukraine has no right to sovereignty and belongs to the country he leads? Which country is currently occupying and claiming ownership over a significant portion of Ukraine's sovereign territory?

Yeah, all Russian neighbors should build several layers of massive border walls with mine fields in between.

The army is deployed on the territory of their country. By the way, 100k is very little for a country like Russia. The US deployed 800k troops before Operation Desert Storm and 500k before the invasion of Vietnam.
Moreover, the populations of Iraq and Ukraine are comparable in principle.
While other countries are building walls, Russia has built a bridge.

meh, maybe it would be a fair comparison if we took a bite out of Venezuela or something and claimed it as our own and then fomented insurrection to try to take the rest. Doubtless their more powerful Allies would do as we are. Though there really is no fair comparison since Venezuela wasn’t a part of the US in the past. Putin thinks he has the right to take back what the USSR lost and work towards restoring Russian influence and prestige.

The chronology of events was different. First, in Ukraine there were calls to beat the Russians. Then Crimea, with a predominantly Russian population, exercised its right of autonomy and seceded from the country where the military coup took place. Following, already without the right of autonomy, Donbass announced the separation. But this decision did not comply with international rules, because Russia could not accept it. Since then, Donbass has been defending its independence. And Ukraine directly declares "This is our land, but we don't need people" which implies the genocide of the natives. Russia is ready to protect people if Ukraine starts a full-scale war.

This entire Vlad power grab might actually fail. This winter in Ukraine has been mild to date, hence, the ground is not frozen. Let's hope that this Ukraine winter remains mild into spring and Vlad can put his toys back in the box.
