First, a Trump appointed conservative judge in Texas tried to ban the effective FDA-approved abortion pill nationwide. After four years of intensive scientific research, the pill has been in use for 20 years with fewer fatalities than penicillin and Viagra.

Next, an appeals court nixed the Trump judge and ruled that the pill should have limited availability. The pill is a part of the most commonly used method for ending pregnancies in the United States. The appeals court consists of Republican chosen conservative judges.

Next, "Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. issued an order on Friday temporarily ensuring that a common abortion pill would remain widely available while the Supreme Court considered whether to grant the Biden administration’s emergency request to preserve the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug," the Times.

The Times continued, "The order was meant to maintain the status quo while the justices studied the briefs and lower court rulings. Justice Alito set a brisk schedule for the court’s consideration of the case. His order, an administrative stay, instructed the groups challenging the F.D.A.’s approval of the abortion drug, mifepristone, to file their brief by Tuesday at noon."

Republican appointed judges want to make the FDA moot. If the Republicans are successful with this, every FDA-approved drug will be at the mercy of every conservative judge in the country. Who then will research, test, and make available badly needed medication for Americans? Will Americans die because of the views of the Religious Right, an integral part of the Republican Party?

Who created this chaos? Who made this all possible for Republicans?

The chaos began when Republican appointed conservative Supreme Court justices nullified Roe vs. Wade, which turned abortion-related issues over to the 50 states and 870 federal judges.

As one might expect, Republicans created enormous chaos, and now that will spill over to the FDA ... its authority and its responsibilities.

It will be interesting to see if the forum's Republicans respond to this report.

After the Republican-chosen conservative judges on the Supreme Court nullified a fundamental right of Americans -- the right of a pregnant woman to make decisions related to her health -- other Republican-chosen conservative judges and Republican state legislatures are imposing their religious beliefs on others.

In many Republican-run states, pregnant women are not allowed to make critical health decisions. Based on their religious views concerning pregnancies, Republicans have decided the state will make those decisions, not the woman and her doctor.

What fundamental right will be next for Republicans? FDA-approved medication?

Republican-chosen conservative judges have already started Now these judges can void decisions previously made by scientists and doctors after years of research, again based solely on their religious beliefs, not science. As a consequence, a person might be jailed for ordering FDA-approved medicine.

CNBC reports, "The appeals court late Wednesday blocked U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s order that suspended the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone.

"But the court temporarily rolled back major changes the FDA has implemented over the years to make mifepristone easier to use and obtain. The order bars mail delivery of the abortion pill. Patients will now have to obtain the prescription drug from a doctor and will have to undergo several examinations in person while they are taking the medication.

"The court changed the time frame when mifepristone can be administered to up to 49 days into the pregnancy, down from the previous 70 days.

"The Biden administration will ask the Supreme Court to intervene in the legal fight around the FDA's abortion pill mifepristone, after a federal appeals court imposed restrictions on its use.

"In a statement Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department “strongly disagrees” with the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals decision. He added that the administration will “be seeking emergency relief from the Supreme Court to defend the FDA’s scientific judgment and protect Americans’ access to safe and effective reproductive care.”

This isn't just about safe abortions. If Republican-chosen conservative judges can overrule years of scientific research because of their religious beliefs, our country is in serious trouble.

As Republicans have already found out the hard way -- election loses -- the majority of Americans feel that way.

This point will be supported by the forum's Republicans who are unlikely touch the issues in this report.

CNN reports, "What happened in one judge’s courtroom in Texas could have drastic effects for the United States’ entire drug approval process, experts warn.

"US District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s ruling that suspended the US Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the medication abortion drug mifepristone was an unprecedented one, the first time a court has bypassed the federal system set up to determine what drugs should be allowed on the market.

"Regardless of whether the ruling – or a part of it – is ultimately allowed to stand, legal scholars, scientists and drugmakers are concerned that the decision could start a trend of drugs being targeted in courts, creating a chilling effect on drug development in the US and hurting patients in the process.

"Vaccines, including the Covid-19 shots, antidepressants and psychotropic medicines could be at risk."

“The approval process will be at risk, and it’s not just an approval process that patients rely on and providers rely on, it’s one that has been considered the gold standard, really, for the world,” former FDA Commissioner Dr. Jane Henney said. Henney was the head of the FDA when mifepristone was approved.

Now conservative judges appointed by Republicans want to change all that in accordance with their religious beliefs which they wish to impose on others.

So far, Republicans have remained silent.

Abortion might be the issue that tips the 2024 election. The Republicans have doubled down on it while a majority seem to favor limited pro choice positions. The current conservative approach by Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, might spell the end of his slim presidential hopes. He has overplayed his conservative hand in my opinion.

Unlike many Republicans, I support choice to a moderately limited extent. Women and families should have a choice within a reasonable period of time. The ultra conservative “heart beat standard” is not reasonable. A woman needs to know if she is pregnant in time to decide.

At the same time I am strongly opposed to very late term abortion, except for strictly medical reasons. If the progressives drive me into a corner and say that abortions are legal any time up to nine months, I have to say no.

The history of the abortion issue is interesting, especially as it relates to those who are termed evangelicals. Back in the '70's, the evangelicals considered abortion to be a Catholic issue, of little concern to them. A few people stoked the fire and set up the all-or-nothing battle we now have. The Republican Party/'conservatives' may have mounted a tiger. They've pretty much eliminated the possibility of a graceful dismount. Riding it into the 2024 elections may not turn out all they well for them.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

‘We’re Getting Killed on Abortion’: Inside Trump’s Secret Meetings With the Religious Right

SINCE LATE LAST year, Donald Trump has been holding private meetings with religious-right figures in an effort to remind them about his anti-abortion record and ensure their support. But instead of thanking Trump for his role in repealing Roe v. Wade, the leaders are pressing for hardcore commitments that go far beyond what he is comfortable with — and what he thinks voters will allow him to get away with.

According to two participants and another source close to Trump, the ex-president has warned leaders in off-the-record conversations that Republicans risk “losing big” — in Trump’s words — unless they follow his lead. He has warned the leaders to shift their own messaging, telling them to emphasize “exceptions” to abortion bans, including in cases of rape, incest, or a threat to the life of the mother. In these frank talks, Trump has stressed this is his 2024 plan, saying it’s necessary to prevent Democrats from painting him as an “extremist.”

    https://www.rollingstone.com/politi...bortion-2024-primary-dobbs-effect-1234713039/

I suppose there's a debate to be had about who is more responsible for the conservative majority that overturned Roe. Individual 1, who made an anti-abortion position the litmus test for his nominees (even though they lied about it during their confirmation hearings), or Mitch McTreason who handed Trump two seats by stealing them.

Either way, it's an issue that is becoming more and more of a political albatross.

Don't tell the women in your life, if there are any, that you enjoy trivializing the threat of them being forced to carry a pregnancy to term against their will.

The thing is, in order to garner the support of Repub primary voters, the Crazy, he has to align himself with their extremist positions. It's a problem across the board for Repub candidates who must appease the base to get to the general election where they face a much more moderate electorate.

Is that a "go to comfort zone" of yours, because it's off topic hence unrelated to the OP and thread topic? It's understandable however to fear the female vote.....

No, it's totally related to the female vote. Abortion is one issue: the trans athlete issue is another one. You just don't want to discuss it.

Start you own thread then because this one's specific to abortion, I going to have to consider that many on the RW are in fear of the women's vote....hence the desperate need to derail this thread to a trans issue.

Looking for it in the post to which I responded. "And does that vote include giving up their position in sports to trans athletes? Are women supposed to lose their college scholarships, that they have worked to earn to the trans-woke agenda?"
    Can't find it.

Well, it's pretty clear to me that women's control of their bodily autonomy is a political and ideological third rail :).

Question, as a matter of establishing your position. What are you considering abortion? The simple ending of the pregnancy, or the ending of a pregnancy either due to or resulting in the termination of the offspring?

For Repubs, since their's is a minority position. One that gets more and more out of the mainstream as they move towards fulfilling their desire for a national ban for all abortions.

Obviously it's both, and I know that neither of those positions is acceptable to conservative Christians.

I am influenced by my mother who was pro-choice. Her mother died when my mother was 16 years old because she did not get an abortion. The doctors told my maternal grandmother. whom I never met, that she needed to get an abortion because her kidneys would not stand up to the pregnancy. This was in the late 1920s. She died from kidney failure four years after giving birth.

I am further influenced by the fact that a child is a tremendous responsibility, mentally and financially. Family planning is a very necessary function.

I know that this is a value judgement, and that my position does not square with most conservatives. So be it.
