Ok I missed this. I have got this information from Finkelstein but his work seems to be well researched.

The straits were shut he says 17th or 18th May....but they only remained shut for two or three days. After that they were quietly letting boats through.

Israel only used them for oil and she had months of supplies. Hence really no problem to Israel, plenty of supplies and they were in any case only shut two or three days.

The argument according to him was political. For a start the Israelis had always been concerned that the arabs would find someone like Ataturk who would bring them up to the First world 20th C. Nasser seemed such a person to them. He believes the 56 war was partly, on behalf of the Brits as well to get rid of Nasser, to keep the Arabs down.

So Nasser made this song and dance about closing the Straits and Israel thought 'who is he an Arab to talk like that'....but you know what there was a bit more to it than that. Egypt did not agree these were International waters. They believe they belonged to Egypt and had been having arguments with Israel over this. Before closing the straits for 2 or 3 days he offered to go to the International Court of Justice for adjuration. Israel said no. Finkelstein says because they believed you do not go on an equal footing with an Arab - you know these backward people.

 

Those 100 students in Ferguson, self identifying with the Palestinians, isn't having the international impact they may have been hoping for.
