Every time I go to the grocery I risk contracting the virus, as that is my biggest risk(being around multiple strangers). I do not want to be in a grocery store with the poor timing of being there right after some Mega-church just got out of service and decided to shop on their way home, anymore than I want to be shopping with a bunch of spring break kids who just came to the store after leaving the lake or a party.

I won't surmise whether any of the church members will get ill, much less die. I hope they won't. The whole point is that we should be avoiding groups as much as possible....and we should be avoiding people who are not avoiding groups...but the latter exposure is impossible to identify and control.

That minister isn't just risking his flock to take a 1st Amendment stand...he's putting the entire community at risk without the public's consent.

The Murray model shows that deaths will lie within a range of ~ 40K - ~ 160K with 95% confidence. That assumes the federal guidelines will be followed but does not factor in any life saving effects of the “new” medications.

Local Update for Austin: (Most of Austin is in Travis County.)

I'm guessing there is a college town, Spring Break effect on age of the infected??? Austin's population is just under 1 million. University of Texas at Austin has 50,000 on-campus students (5% of the population).

    Travis County

The county reported its second death on March 30. The first death, a woman in her 70s was reported on March 27.

As of March 30, Austin-Travis County is reporting 206 cases of COVID-19.

These cases have risen steadily since March 13, when the first two cases were reported. Since then, multiple drive-through testing sites have opened in the area.

The age ranges of the first 206 cases included:

    • 0-1 – 1
    • 1-9 – 1
    • 10-19 – 3
    • 20-29 – 45
    • 30-39 – 53
    • 40-49 – 39
    • 50-59 – 37
    • 60-69 – 16
    • 70-79 – 8
    • 80 and over – 3

Where I live - Solano County with ~ 450,000 residents near Sacramento - has not had a new case in the last 7 days. There have been 34 total cases, 12 total hospitalizations, and zero deaths. The county is mostly rural but with population centers in the Fairfield/Suisun/Vacaville. We also have Travis AFB where some infected persons have been quarantined. A big part of this is people who work in the SF Bay area staying home from work.

Agreed. The two who tragically ingested fish bowl cleaner were stupid.

Now that the FDA has approved chloroquine how many other people do you predict will drink fish bowl cleaner ??

You might enjoy this write up from 30 "smart, macro thinkers" when asked how this virus will impact society. Really interesting points. One of the write ups in particular, that is relevant to you and @LoneStarGal 's discussion of religion, is what this lady had to say:

Coronavirus Will Change the World Permanently. Here’s How.

Great article and It should probably be discussed in detail in the Paradigm Shift thread.

The point about changes as to how we think and operate as a society is well made and we can no longer afford the "luxury" of disparaging Science and Education because it is the highly educated scientists and medical professionals who are, quite literally, saving our asses right now.

Maybe you aren't understanding, and I thought it was pretty clear. The couple in AZ didn't have a 'death wish', no. What they had was ignorance, which turned out to be lethal for the husband. Yes, it seems people can actually die of stupidity.

Now that the FDA has approved a safer (maybe) method of treatment, people will make a rational decision based on facts and outcomes before asking for, or being prescribed this newly approved drug.

In summary, yes... if people at this point resort to ingesting fish tank cleaner, they must be aware that the odds are very high that it will kill them, thus making them suicidal with a wish to die. (death wish)

    Is that clear now.

I'm responding to member AFM who claims it was not Trump's fault that the man that died had ingested fish tank cleaner because it contained the chemical chloroquine phosphate in the mistaken belief the additive, commonly used by aquariums to clean fish tanks, thinking was a prophylactic for COVID-19. It resulted in the husband’s death and his spouse in critical care. The only reason they took that drastic step was because Trump touted chloroquine as a possible treatment for Covid-19 in his press briefing last week. The wife stated that they heard Trump say this at least twice, so they trusted him. Yes, I hold him responsible for that fatal event.

35% hospitalization rate is scary, but it's good the overall number of cases is low for now.

The US is a "zoo" of beliefs, the complete opposite of Europe. I'm not sure either get it "right".

But, what is "right"? What is wrong? I don't know that either. I was born into a religion. I think that is the problem. We should be able to think through - that is, ask questions of our beliefs.

But such a piece-of-work (on oneself) requires some very crafty questions-and-answers. That is where most fail. Answering the questions.

Because the answers are not obvious and life itself occludes them ...

(NB: Stop the world, I wanna get off! ;^)

That's my beef with this. We may see some Constitutional challenges here, but it's imperative we look beyond our selfishness and consider that intentionally doing things that can increase that spread of this virus to those most vulnerable is not acceptable. We should voluntarily comply and stop promoting the political narratives some are using for their own profit.

    Watching Gov. Cuomo's daily presser.
It is, as always, incredibly well put together and factual.

What really impressed me about Cuomo yesterday was that he possessed humility to ask for medical help from outside, with the promise that New Yorkers will help those who help them once the peak has passed.

Regardless of your political tilt, one must admit that this man is all business about wanting to do the best for his state.

The implications are serious. For starters this is a nuclear carrier and there is probably a support group somewhere in the area. As it is says in the article Social Distancing is impossible on navy ships so the odds of this occurring on other ships are considerable.

Forget the right blend-in on CNN, we are way past 803,000 cases. We are already at 819,000.

What do we do when 3/4 of the fleet is sick as hell and 4.8% of all sailors are dead?
