The crime on the border is worse than it ever has been, mostly due to the drug trade. I have seen what was then called 'wetbacks' (not PC) leaving the Rio Grande. A teacher was shot and killed by one.

You may dismiss the drugs, child trafficing, and violence as inconsequential but tell that to the victims.

But he does not need those Americans. he needs enough votes to insure there is no primary surprises (his base). At that point he will get most Republicans just like the Dem candidate will get most Dems no matter who is chosen. Then he just needs to convince a small minority of people that he does not suck.

Maybe you should start a thread about Trump's re-election chances, AJ.

Hey, I have an idea: Why not put your PF membership on the line like you did last time?

If Trump's bruised ego were the only issue here, I'd agree with you. But for decades we (America) degraded countries like the USSR & East Germany because of the Berlin Wall. It became a symbol of their ineptitude, cold-heartedness and their tyrannical rule. Now Trump and his minions want to put the U.S. into the same moral box the Communists were in during the Cold War. I don't believe the U.S. has ever stood for that kind of society--one that needed a wall to keep outsiders out or insiders in. I agree with Pelosi, that it's immoral. It's not a matter of cost in money. It's a matter of symbolizing the kind of people & nation we are. I want the government re-opened. It should have never become a victim of Trump's incessant ego. But he's made it so. Trump proudly claimed he was responsible for the shutdown. Let him own it, and pay the price when it comes due.

What Trump & his conservative base continue ignoring is that Democrats want a strong border security too. We just want it as a mostly electronic & border guard system. Trump wants a physical wall, which we don't feel will be effective. Republican charges that Democrats don't want border security or that Democrats want an open border are all lies. How do we deal with liars?

Not on the economy! Trump's approval on the economy is 50% approve and 43% disapprove = 2020 win.

To quote James Carville said to the Bush Campaign........."It's the economy stupid"

Yeah, they liked walls when Trump wasn't President and the Border Patrol says they work so why the sudden change? If you think walls are not effective because they are 'old technology' then go without the wheel.

Way too early to make any prediction for 2020.

That said, I would rather be the Dems than Trump headed into 2020.

Why wouldn't a 30ft tall wall with razor wire, motion sensors and other anti climbing devices work? Tell me how a 50+ year old woman or 7 year old child would do climbing a 30ft ladder, navigating razor wire, motion sensors and other anti climbing devices then climbing down another 30ft ladder and getting away before the Border Patrol shows up. How would not that be effective?

If the economy holds, you could resurrect JFK and run him, you'd still lose.

    That's the wrong question.

The question is how would such an individual choose to come to America and stay without having papers to do so.

Half those hear chose the entirely legal "get a visa and stay" method which has been satisfactory for all ages.

But, I'm touched by your fear of grandmas and young children.

The issue here isn't the cost, it's the effectiveness and the symbolism of building a wall around one's country and the message that sends to everyone, including ourselves. America has a long history of both isolation & immigration. A wall creates & encourages isolationism, and that is a poor message from the most powerful and wealthiest country on the planet, and a world leader even if she doesn't want to be. It's better to spend less money and go for electronic & video surveillance, coupled with border guards to intercept anyone detected. Trump has been told this by border experts but refuses to listen because he feels compelled to follow thru with his campaign promises to his base, regardless of whether it's best for the nation. That's putting politics before national interest. That's also putting personal ego before national interests.

Lucky for Trump he does not take the advice forwarded by the OP, because it is horrible.

Trump is doing well with his approval rating. He should win in 2020.

Yes and once deported they won't get another VISA and will need to climb the wall to get back in. What's your point?

The guy who killed Kate Steinle was deported 5 times. The guy who killed the Sheriff's Deputy in Nevada was deported 8 times and still came back. Show me proof either re-entered on a VISA.

So you were against the gay marriage ruling right? And I'm sure I'll find that in your post history right since you are such a big states rights fan. LOL

CNN. The network that took Pelosi out for ice cream when she came back to the House. But I'm sure they did the same for Ryan when he took over right? LOL

It explains so much that you would see them as non partisan.

He's showing the American people how we can eliminate 25% of the Government and the vast majority won't be affected in the least.

All good American-loving citizens are opposed to Trump who will take our rights if we allow him.

He will not declare Emergency Powers tonight.

Your numbers are few and weak. What rights is he taking away? There is NO right to cross the border illegally nor one to employ illegals in your restaurant/construction company.

Good question. Many Democrats would accept all three so long as the smallest of the three was the physical wall. That's not because we want to oppose Trump, it's because we are convinced the wall would be the least effective deterrent and the most costly.

Trump voters don’t care, this is what he was elected for — to hurt people that his supporters don’t like.

“He’s not hurting the people he needs to be”: a Trump voter says the quiet part out loud

“I voted for him, and he’s the one who’s doing this,” Minton told Mazzei. “I thought he was going to do good things. He’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting.”

He’s not hurting the people he needs to be hurting.

Think about that line for a second. Roll it over in your head. In essence, Minton is declaring that one aim of the Trump administration is to hurt people — the rightpeople. Making America great again, in her mind, involves inflicting pain.
