Trump ad asks people to support the troops. But it uses a picture of Russian jets.

I am sorry to be so late to correct my erroneous identification of the aircraft. If Nightmare515 says they are Mig-29s, then they are in fact Mig-29s. I trust his credentials and expertise on this subject completely.

I think I owe the Forum an explanation as to why it took so long to correct my mistake. I live in Oregon and our house was in the path of the terrible wildfires that are raging in our local area. We have had to evacuate and were allowed to come back to our house on three separate occasions. I spent a couple of days helping fire crews on scratch lines on the north boundary of our property. It is physically exhausting work and anything I could do to help the fire crews save out property, then I was going to do it. We were fortunate in that we grow a crop that gave our property the highest priority for preservation from fire and that helped save several of our neighbor's homes.

As far as being a partisan anything, no, not really. I am not a registered Democrat nor Republican. I get accused of being a partisan conservative and a partisan liberal in a roughly equal measure. It is far too easy to blame one's own transgressions on the bias of someone else. Just obey the rules and there won't even be an issue.

 

It's an easy mistake to make especially if this particular field of study isn't something you are dealing with on a routine basis. Aircraft all look roughly the same because specific types are designed for specific roles regardless of country of origin. MiG's and Sukhoi's look like our planes because they are designed to do the same roles as our planes. The MiG-29 is the Russians "F-15" designed to fill that role for them. The Russian MiG-25 was their "F-14" designed for long range bomber interception, etc.

Enemy threat analysis is a pretty specialized field even in the military so most folks regardless of occupation wouldn't be able to just look at a silhouette of an aircraft and immediately identify it. And since this was supposedly an American Presidential campaign ad everybody would obviously assume that the jets in the picture were American ones so folks were immediately began trying to associate the silhouettes with something in the US arsenal once the criticism started.

But unfortunately no, those are Russian MiG-29s and whoever made this ad simply made an honest mistake which is nowhere near worthy of criticism.

Based on this thread alone I can tell that NOBODY knows what the hell they are talking about regarding military hardware so we can't exactly blame the folks who made this ad for getting it wrong lol. This thread is full of various folks being 100% positive that the aircraft in the OP were "something" of ours (F-15s, F/A-18s, F-14s, etc) and they were 100% wrong even after going on google images and trying to figure it out lol. Not hating on anybody, 99.9% of the world couldn't identify the silhouettes in the OP, but we can't really make fun of the ones who made the ad in the OP when everybody trying to either defend or condemn the ad were wrong too lol.
