I'm assuming that by "ransom" you mean the plane load of $400 million or so in cash that the Obama administration sent to Iran when the ink was dry on the nuclear deal. A) it wasn't ransom and B) it wasn't taxpayer money. Not. One. Dime. The cash in various denominations was Iran's money. The deal included that we, the USA, would unfreeze Iranian state and private business assets, which we seized a couple decades previously.

Do you get it? It was their effing money. They simply asked for that portion of it in cash of various denominations, not just in dollars. There was no good reason to say no to that.

But of course the right wing talking heads took that ball and ran with it, easily convincing the righties who don't like to look things up for themselves that Obama had paid Iran out of our taxpayer dollars. Go ahead, ask Rush yourself. I did, and he deflected like a madman. Guys like him make a good living by taking a tiny piece of a whole story out of context and telling people why it should make them angry. Rush does it, Hannity does it, and Carlson tries to do it but lacks the intellect and just starts screaming nonsense. Pathetic.

I may have been wrong about one detail, though. I had read other articles that claimed the $400 million (not 1.7 billion) was part of Iran's unfrozen assets, but according to your link:

"The State Department has said the payment was part of a settlement of a decades-long legal dispute before an international tribunal in The Hague and that the timing was coincidental."
