IF they are made in either country are the operative word here. If Canadians try to bring should purchased in the US across the border they pay tarrifs if their manfacture was in another country.

You are conflating duties with tariff's. The two are completely different.

They pay tarrifs on shoes manufactured in another country but purchased in the US so they pay both duty and tarrifs

They pay tariffs on shoes manufactured in the US ? What does this have to do with Trump's false claim about tariffs on US made shoes in Canada ?

No they don't. In typical trumpian style it appears you don't know what you don't know, but think you do.

I mean if "several Canadians immediately confessed" then isn't Trump correct?

I don't understand. Don't people who shop in America pay the sales tax at the cash register as part of the purchase?

Correct about what ? Go back and read the post. I did not say Trump was incorrect about the fact that Canadians try to sneak stuff across the border to avoid paying duty - so why are you bringing this up as if I did ?

Yes .. they do. Trump was demonizing Canadians for buying shoes in the US and then trying to avoid duties in Canada (the scuff em up").. then he tied this to high tariffs on US manufactured shoes in Canada.

There are no tariffs on US manufactured shoes in Canada. They are exempt due to NAFTA.

Key phrase in article is "rambling speech". Smuggling through customs is both a very serious offense and also difficult unless it's a diamond ring or something similarly small and high value. It's not like someone can smuggle a refrigerator or closet full of clothes through.

Why is this guy hell bent on demonizing Canadians for coming to the US and spending their hard earned money ? There is no better dollar than the tourist dollar. It is free money coming into the US from an external source.

Trump should be factoring this into any perceived trade imbalance and encouraging more rather than discouraging it - "IF" he actually cared about the working man/woman in this nation. .. but he doesn't. Everything he does is for political gain. Anything that he thinks will be believed by the ignorant in his base.

Trump is a megalomaniac and an elitist who does not give a rat about the " Lower - genetically unfit" classes. The guy is an adherent of Eugenics (now known as biological determinism) ideology and when one realizes this it explains almost all of his actions.

There is a "personal" exemption of $200 of goods if the stay is over 24 hours and $800 if the stay is over 72 (iirc). Its the same treatment as US citizens returning from Canada. Most goods have no duty thanks to NAFTA, but any applicable taxes are applied to all items over the personal exemption.

It works exactly like it does in the US.

YOu'd think a stable genius like Trump would know that. I guess being a clueless idiot is all part of the "art of the deal".

    Agreed on the rules.

The problem is linked to the phrase "stable genius". :)

As do Americans who purchase stuff in Canada. Both have an amount that can be brought back duty free. If you exceed that amount you have to pay the sales tax rate that the province or state would normally charge on any product purchased in that local.

A tariff is something completely different. Sales tax is applied equally over all products. A tariff targets a product from a specific nation which gives the other products a competitive advantage.

Sure, but what if a Canadian spends a million dollars in goods in the US and then takes the goods back to Canada but doesn't pay the duty? Why is that bad for America?

The reason this confused me at first, is that the quote from Trump didn't include the words "sales tax." However, for some reason you implied that he was talking about sales tax.

Trump used the word tariffs in relation to Canadians sneaking shoes into Canada . He implied that they do so because of high tariffs.

I did not mean to imply that Trump was talking about sales tax... just that he was completely confused about tariffs.
