What possible difference does that make? If people are working and still can't make ends meet, they're doing something wrong. Any one of a thousand things, or several of them. Maybe they're paying rent for individual properties, instead of pooling resources as a family or group. Maybe they're buying iphones, fast food, cigarettes, alcohol, new clothes. Maybe they're taking vacations, eating out, going to the cinema, getting their hair styled, etc etc etc. If you're doing ANY of these things, you are not poor.

And FTR, the 'poor' in America are some of the richest (and fattest) people on earth.

Your views on poverty and the crushing burden of being poor in america is... well... pretty lame. Patently incorrect in most cases. Obviously.

How about just accepting that you cannot demonstrate that the average 'poor' American - working or otherwise - does not spend a single cent on any of those luxuries listed. Or that they are doing the fundamental stuff needed to stay out of poverty (ie, multi-generational families remaining together to share costs, living in a place they can afford, eating rice & beans, never indulging in smoking/drinking/drugs/gambling/fast food/shopping etc, and never spending more than they earn). You know, the stuff that the genuinely poor do in the Third World because they have to. And the stuff First Worlders do if they're serious about leaving poverty. Anyone in the First World who DOESN'T make those sacrifices, is clearly not interested in leaving poverty.
