It is a line our leaders have been walking for a long, long time in the interests of international power and influence, this tolerance and covering for foreign dictatorships while paying lipservice to our national values and enforcing them both here and elsewhere abroad where we don't have those vested interests, or rather, enforcing them abroad where it is expedient to those interests and failing to enforce them where it is equally expedient.

The intellectual dishonesty at play here is hard to overstate. DeVos never said or even intimated that every American school or even very many of them might need to shoot bears. She merely used one school as an example of the necessity of federalism and as-local-as-possible control of the education system.

Rather than report accurately on her stance, these media outlets created a fake news event to smear a reasonable woman’s perfectly reasonable opinion."

The tricky bit is wrapped up in the following question: did the new sort-of-reforming guy, MBS, order this, or know about it beforehand? If he did, or if he did not but effectively condones it, we ought to change our policy towards Saudi Arabia. But there is something anomalous about this event. If North Korea, or Russia, or Syria, or Iran had done something like this ... well, that's what they do, although they would almost certainly have done it in a less clumsy way.

But this new ruler of Saudi Arabia is trying to modernize his country. This doesn't mean he is some sort of nice-guy liberal, but this sort of thing runs against the grain of how a modern state operates, in several different ways. (For one thing, carrying out a hit on the soil of another state is not smart. For another, doing it in a way that doesn't give you plausible deniability, as the phrase goes, is doubly stupid.)

Now ... doing something blatantly horrible like this would be a great way for people in Saudi who don't like the new ruler to discredit him. Killing two birds with one stone, so to speak. He's now either got to find out who actually ordered this, and have a purge of his own security services -- on which he relies to stay in power -- or he's got to nothing, and be discredited.

So I think we should wait and see what develops.
