The entire Pacific theatre of war was one big free fire zone and so was Europe.

All of those islands in the Pacific before being invaded by U.S. Marines or soldiers were heavily bombarded by naval gunfire and aircraft from above.

All of those islands had a native population.

 

In WW2, the technology did not exist for target discrimination. Smart bombs and precision strikes didn't exist in the 1940's.

Those technologies do exist today. To deliberately choose to not use them and to choose instead to use weapons which kill civilians indiscriminately is to deliberately choose murder.
