The solution to the dreaded tipping sham is to enforce a 10USD/hr wage on all staff - regardless of tips.

Tips will then decrease, but any left will then be split between all staff and owners, in an equitable manner.

    This is the way ahead?

Employers are already required by law to cover minimum wage if the server does not make enough in tips. Tipping actually gives servers an incentive to work harder...rewarding results rather than rewarding merely showing up and going through the motions.

I support tipping because its anti-equality....its all about personal achievement. My ex-gf made about $40k a year as a server, which is insane money considering she only worked 25-30 hours a week.

    What?

#1: Why do you think the waiters need a higher minimum wage than the rest of the population?
#2: Waiters/waitresses already make minimum wage, by law. If they have a bad shift with few tips, they still make minimum wage.
#3: Tips are an incentive for good work. If my waiter ignores me, is rude, etc., I may give little or not tip. If my waiter does a fantastic job, I'll give a big tip. Just today I gave my waiter an $8tip on a $17 order.
#4: Why would the waiting staff share tips with owners? :confusion: When I give a tip, it is my $ which I am choosing to give to the waiter for his performance.

Why don't you want them to make more than $10.00/hr? Don't you think their job sucks enough already?

I loved my years of bartending.

And I made far more that 10.00 an hour.

It is considered extremely bad form to tip the owner. As if he's hurting and can't make ends meet. Deserving of pity.

What an insult! Are you just freaking rude or what?

When I bartended there were people that tipped me very well, and early, to get good service and they did. Even if I was busy I always kept an eye on their drink, used the freshest stuff to make it, and gave them priority. If your not tipping I am not going out of my way for you because you are taking up a spot that a more generous person might have.

I want you out of my bar as quickly as possible.

Maybe its a state law...but in Iowa if a server does not make minimum wage with tips+salary the employer is required to cover the rest.

I worked in restaurants for 4 years and my brother is a restaurant manager.

I have never understood people that refuse to tip, I have actually been with people that complained because I tipped too well, just weird that they get so upset over such things

You mean refuse to tip in general, or in some cases? Because I've noticed based on experiences with friends and family that I'm a bit of an odd tipper, because I can be an extremely generous or cruel tipper - I have no problem with a 50+% tip, just as I have no problem with a 0% tip - and it is entirely based on the waiter/waitress. I know, for example, my mother waited tables for something like a year and now she "feels" for them, but I did give her crap once because she tipped more than 15% to a waiter who did absolutely horrible. The waiter didn't get the right order, was rude (<--might be a slight exaggeration, but he certainly wasn't polite - when the order really was screwed up he said "well, you did take a bite"), was slow, walked by when our waters were empty without a care. When she saw I wasn't tipping she asked and I explained straight up why - waiters earn tips for good performance, and if they do the crappy job that this guy did, they don't deserve tips, especially when they're already getting paid minimum wage or more. She then increased the tip that she gave, which I did complain about. It's not right to reward poor performance like that.

in general, as in never tip, bad service is one thing, never tipping is something I do not get, they should order their food to go and sit in the car if they don't want to tip

they should at least tell their server up front they never tip, otherwise it's like stealing imo

Solution in search of a problem.

As an aside, my dad had a good method:

He would tally our family's bill when we ordered. Then he would lay 25% of that on the table in a stack of $1 bills. He would point to the stack and tell the waiter: "This is your tip. This stack will only get smaller." Then, as our meal would progress, he would remove a dollar for various waiter-related transgressions (forgotten requests, empty beverages, slow responses, etc) Needless to say, we usually got pretty good service. And, the server got a tip commensurate with their performance.

I agree. Unless the service is bad, I tip a minimum of 20% and more if the service is good or exceptional. I also always tip in cash, that way the employer can't skim the tips of the waitstaff (an illegal but common practice) even when I use a card to pay the bill.
I live in a resort area year round, and since my wife and I go out fairly often to eat or to a local bar, we get known by the staff at various places. During the high season that pays off big time. We can go into a crowded bar, wave to the bartender (who knows us) and they start us a tab and since they usually know what we will want give us great service even when it's five deep to the bar.

Treat those who server you well, especially those who give good service and they will treat you like royalty.

I believe tips should represent the service received.

I also believe any food delivery driver, barring a horrible delivery time, should get a minimum courtesy of $5 for every delivery.

    Gas isn't free.

I have lawyers and doctors who tip $1 on a regular basis, regardless of how fast I bring their food, and after enough times, their delivery goes to the back of the line.

I'll even stop at 7-11 and get myself a snack and smoke a cigarette, then slowly roll up to begrudgingly deliver their food with no semblance of a smile whatsoever, because as far as I'm concerned, they can eat my dust.

Nah. If service sinks to the levels of EU, no thanks. Nearly everywhere I ate felt like they were doing me a favor bringing food. Learn customer service EU.
