Mexico Agreed to Take Border Actions Months Before Trump Announced Tariff Deal

WASHINGTON — The deal to avert tariffs that President Trump announced with great fanfare on Friday night consists largely of actions that Mexico had already promised to take in prior discussions with the United States over the past several months, according to officials from both countries who are familiar with the negotiations.

Friday’s joint declaration says Mexico agreed to the “deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.” But the Mexican government had already pledged to do that in March during secret talks in Miami between Kirstjen Nielsen, then the secretary of homeland security, and Olga Sanchez, the Mexican secretary of the interior, the officials said.

Or, is the NYT just giving fodder to the deranged with TDS. Mexico had done little or nothing to alleviate the immigrant "caravans" that Mexico themselves promptly pushed northward toward the US border.

South Korea and Japan, two of our most important allies in Asia, would strongly disagree with you. And we are duty bound by treaty to mutually protect and defend. As North Korea has completed a functioning nuclear weapon and is sending a lot of missiles over those countries, NK is a threat. And as Commander and Chief and in charge of international relations, President Trump is morally, ethically, and lawfully in the right when he deals with that.

 

Yes, we are duty bound to protect them. Let me know what Trump actually did again besides some words and get back to me. What I said still stands. They are not and have never been a threat. If NK attacks South Korea I'm pretty sure they know what would happen.

And you do?, when it's clear from that response you don't actually care about actually fixing problems or finding solutions, only about the "pomp and circumstance" you call Trump. It's clear you have made up your mind before the field of ideas for the next election cycle has even gotten a start. That itself tells me everything I need to know.

 

Well President Trump brought them to the negotiation table for starters and has managed to thaw the deep freeze.
He has not removed any sanctions.
He did get Americans held in their custody released and returned back to the USA.
He did get remains of Americans killed in the Korean War returned.
And missiles are no long flying over South Korea and Japan except one or two just to test our resolve after which they realized President Trump was a man of his word.

Now show me what previous Presidents have accomplished including Clinton who gave North Korea pretty much unlimited time to complete their bomb and President Bush who was distracted by Afghanistan and Iraq and President Obama who pretty much ignored the whole thing.

You can never be confident when an idealist fanatic has his hand on the nuclear button that he will not use it. Having somebody like President Trump in the White House who makes it very clear that he will bring the full force of military might against them is about the strongest deterrent we can have. I am pretty sure President Trump has Kim Jong-un's respect. Previous Presidents did not..

 

That was a lot of assurances on your part. Other presidents have done many things, I'm not really concerned with them. Obama ignoring them completely including ignoring American citizens in custody, I'd have to do research on that, but I'm sure that's hyperbole. Were missiles flying over SK/Japan constantly previous to Trump? If so I'm sure they would have said something. They actually weren't. Most of the missile tests have taken place during Trumps presidency. Or are you saying that since NK didn't launch missiles during Obama's presidency that that somehow proves his incompetence. I'm not sure what you are saying. "He has not removed any sanctions". Great, I thought that was kind of status quo. I'm not really saying Trump did nothing, just the amount of hyperbole for what was actually accomplished is astounding to me. I'm not convinced Obama was "idealistic fanatic" like you said, and I'm sure he would have done his job if it came to that. Though, yes I can see that Trumps trigger happy fingers at least have that going for him (he would "press the button"). There are tons of other issues with that though. Look at both sides of the issue.

It seems to me besides "communications being opened up" we are effectively in the same place as before. NK is still there and still has nuclear missiles, which is how it's gonna stay most likely. Though I would say, the way Clinton handled it was terrible.

Its not that Ive made up my mind... I actually elected the person I think can fix it. So far, his performance is exceeding my expectations; therefore youre the only malcontent in this discussion. No offense intended... just stating the facts.

 

Trumpists on Friday believed Mexico when Trump tweeted that he just struck a deal with them. Trumpists today call Mexico fake news when they told the NY Times that deal was made in March with someone other than Trump. LOL. Comedy gold!

 

No where in this thread have you explained how he exceeded those un mentioned expectations of yours besides a bunch of out of context billboard images. And yes, thank you for restating that you have in fact, made up your mind.

 

He forced them to the negotiating table with a tariff gun to their head and then got them to agree to do what they had agreed to do in Dec.............much to the gullible satisfaction of the minions.

Amazing isn't it? We were told for eight years that every failure, every problem, everything bad that happened was not Obama's fault but was rather George Bush's fault but Obama got all the credit for anything good that happend.

And now we are being told that everything good that is happening in the Trump Administration is Obama's doing. None of the bad mind you. Just the good.
