    At this point ther
    The people in the north, even the abolistionists, were war weary and spent out. Grant could not get political support for sending troops in large numbers into the South to enforce Reconstruction. Add to that that the Democrat vice president, Andrew Johnson, was working against Grant (and by proxy against Lincoln).

    But that is not the case today. The 82nd and 101st and as many units as it takes should be sent in with orders to snuff the violence whatever it takes.

    It's nothing to do with the National Guard. Trump threatened to use the US Army, which is what my OP addressed.

    The President of the United States has the power to declare martial law, send in troops, and has done so in times of great strife, one of which was the forced desegregation of the South by President Kennedy.

    Lawful, peaceful protests against individual police department policies and individual officer's actions is perfectly legal under provisions for FREE SPEECH and ASSEMBLY.

    Unlawful rioting, arson, wanton destruction, and looting are CRIMES and should be dealt with accordingly -- with suppressing force, speed, and resolute action!

    As a staunch supporter of Biden, I can only agree with sending the army into the streets.

    Trump will prove once again that he's an authoritarian racist and that his supporters are ready to attack individual liberties by exaggerating domestic threats.

    they should impose a mandatory social distancing law. The police in Democrat cities will then spring into action as social distancing must be enforced, looting, not so much.

    Tell it to the New York couple beaten with crowbars and 2 x 4s by the mob for defending their lives and livelihood that it’s an exaggerated domestic threat. Tell them as individuals there rights are less significant than George Floyd’s. But spare me the bs, it leaves me nauseated.

    Leftest governors have control over the guard. The Minnesota National Guard was ordered by the governor to deploy into the dangerous riots without their weapons. It'll have to be the 82nd Airborne in first, then as many active duty units as it takes.

    You're not a supporter of Biden beyond the fact that you hate Trump, and he's Trump's opponent.

    The President of the United States is Commander in Chief of all the Armed Forces. If you imagine that National Guard units are not part of the Armed Forces than you should have discussions with Guard members who underwent numerous deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

    And if you think the National Guard cannot be used inside the United States to stop domestic chaos, then remember what President Eisenhower did in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957, when he placed the Arkansas National Guard under federal control and sent 1,000 U.S. Army paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division to assist them.

    I hope they bring guns, ammo, and Rules of Engagement allowing deadly force. Sadly, I fear a replay of Trump sending the NG to the SW border and keeping them 100 miles from the action with unloaded guns.

    Infantry is trained to close with and kill the enemy. Not sure what sort of anti-riot training or equipment they (82nd) would have.
