    Political extremists love to denounce anyone who opposes them. IMHO, extremism is a form of cowardice; anyone who puts their back against a wall is scared and fearful. It distorts their thinking. They are afraid of standing in the middle of the Arena since they could be attacked from all sides, so they slink over to a wall and put their back to it.

    I always liked Teddy Roosevelt's comments about the man in the arena:

    It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

    Liberal pressure, they are petty foul little creatures that hold up that fraud McCain as a hero or use their press connections to attack any Republican that didn't agree as being insensitive towards McCain. McCain was irrelevant across the board since he abandoned DC and his constituents, only the media could make him relevant again...

    It's an injustice and clearly an unlawful shooting. Plus he was more interested in collecting his brass to hide evidence than checking on the life of the woman or the guy he just shot.

    Funny you mention that - my crazy Leatherneck father lied his way into duty during the Korean War.

    Yeah, that wouldn't go over too well. If I had my way only veterans (preferably combat vets) could serve as CinC, but I can understand why the Founders didn't make that a requirement.

    Well, he considered it an honor to serve his country which is why he never bragged about it or held it against those who didn't serve. Even more to his credit, he taught me at a very young age that war is a terrible thing and only fools and monsters glorify and glamorize it.

    They'll have to defend their own actions, but I will say that if there's one thing worse than a draft dodger it's a blue falcon. If you're going to wind up like John Kerry or Jimmy Massey everyone would be better off if you didn't bother to enlist at all.

    Agreed. The Republican Congress respected McCain even if they didn't always agree with him. They are honoring his 60+ years of service to our nation, something most staffers in the WH recognized but it took a petty President a while to be convinced he should put down his pacifier and pick up a pen.

    Agreed betraying a trust is worse than just being a scumbag. However, bone spurs or not, Trump is now President and Commander in Chief. He needs to man up since he volunteered for the job. If he doesn't, he'll end up being President of the Blue Falcon club.

    I'm a Canadian so clue me in. Does the white house flag get lowered every time a politician dies? If so it must get lowered a lot. Up here we do all that kind of stuff if a leader of a party, a Prime Minister or former, or the Monarch or senior member of the royal family kicks it.

    No, just curious. I've met more than a few vets who claim the oath doesn't apply since their contract is over. I disagreed. An oath is more than a contract. Obviously you agree too...and, sadly, that's rare.

    National politicians. The Flag Code spells it out: http://www.usflag.org/uscode36.html Specifically under §175. Position and manner of display (m)
    The Code specifies days (holidays) for half-staff and the President has the latitude to extend the recommendations or set days of half-staff.

    Overall, I'd say it's not unusual to see the flag at half-staff once a month. Sometimes only for half a day or just a day.
