Why did nobody tell Trump that it would be a bad idea to get Ukraine to investigate Biden?

trump wanted bad press for his political rival....He got away with the Russian collusion and thought he could now do it with Ukraine.

If that’s the case then Trump fell into a pretty obvious trap. He could have of course directed his DOJ to conduct investigations that would not have drawn nearly as much heat as his unofficial channels have.

Nope. Any and all official communication was performed on IP Phones using either NIPRNet or its more secure counterpart SIPRNet. The latter was used specifically for classified information, but even the former is considered a secure line of communication.

Btw, Trump first called Zelensky on April 21, congratulating him on his election and, among other things, "expressed his commitment to work together with President-elect Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people to implement reforms that strengthen democracy, increase prosperity, and root out corruption".

Biden announced his candidacy 4 days later.
