Why the obsession with health insurance covering preexisting conditions?

When I get car insurance (a state requirement by the way) the car insurance never covers damages to the vehicle incurred BEFORE I started paying insurance premiums.

And people on average use their car insurance more than health insurance. So why should insurance providers be required to insure preexisting health conditions?

If you want to insure an existing condition you should be willing to pay a great deal more for it.

Are you actually equating yourself with a car? A car has a depreciation value, planned obsolescence. As you get older, does your life depreciate?

As much as I dislike the ACA, discrimination against pre-existing conditions was a diamond in the mud! I personally think there simply needs to be a law to address it and prevent it.. People are not always in control of their place of employment or insurance providers.

Would you expect that those on medicare with a preexisting condition should be willing pay a lot more? You see once you come down with a condition and it is known then it becomes a preexisting condition.

Erm, it's my understanding that people often could not get any coverage for such conditions (before Obamacare). Presumably, if they could, it would have been too expensive for ordinary people to afford. So I doubt very much it is a question of how much people are willing to pay so much as able to pay.

And what I don't like is the way providers link other bullshit to old injury! When I was sixteen I was "My Fault" broad sided by a car riding motorcycle and it broke my femur in five places. Later on at eighteen I applied for a job at Ford motor company and was denied because the insurance provider claim that I would have future back problems because one leg was slightly shorter than the other..

And that was A LONG time ago :)

What I'm getting at, is providers, if given half a chance will take your money and then deny coverage for things that they deem something occurring today from a illness or injury from many years ago and tie you up in red tape and never cover it!

If it covers pre-existing conditions then by definition it's not insurance.

First off, your opinion is highly unpopular. 81% of people, including 80% of Republicans support coverage of pre-existing conditions.
    https://thehill.com/policy/healthca...f-both-parties-support-obamacare-pre-existing

Second, covering pre-existing conditions is a problem. You are right. If insurance is required to cover damage before the coverage starts then we are going to get a lot of people who don't have insurance and only jump on when they get sick. This results in a pool of insurance payers who are mostly sick people while the healthy don't pay insurance. And such a small pool will result in sky-high insurance rates.

This is why democrats had in individual mandate to ensure that nearly everyone had insurance so that the pool of payers is very large by taxing those without insurance. If you don't like that, we can have a taxpayer funded Medicare for all which results in everyone having insurance and all medical conditions being covered. Republicans want coverage for pre-existing conditions without getting everyone into the insurance so its actually Republicans with the real problem here.

The problem with not covering pre-existing conditions is that 15% of people don't have insurance and many people have poor coverage because they just can't afford good insurance which can cost over $10,000 per year for families. Having an expensive medical condition that isn't covered can ruin your finances and your life. Maybe you didn't have coverage because you are working a low-pay job without insurance, or you are a poor student without insurance, you are unemployed and lost your insurance, or you are a struggling small business owner who couldn't pay insurance. I don't think getting sick when you couldn't afford insurance, or when you were just being stupid should ruin your life. We need a better system.

Unlike cars, medical bills can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and insurance can cost over $10,000 per year, and even more for families that are sick. Also, if a car breaks, you can get a new one. But if you break, then you are screwed and can be drowning in debt.

What we should really do is ensure that we never even have the situation where uninsured people need to get insurance. We need a real healthcare system like other developed nations have where 100% of people are covered and the government spends as much covering everyone as ours spends covering 30% under Medicare and Medicaid. We can start with Medicare for all, and then introduce reforms to make our system more cost effective. Why is it fair that I pay taxes for Medicare and Medicaid but I can't use these services and have to pay rip-off healthcare premiums? Its not fair to working class Americans.

Our unaffordable healthcare system costs 3.5 trillion and is 2 1/2 more than any other developed country. Its projected to rise to over 6 trillion in the next 10 years and is bankrupting many people, keeping many from retiring, and putting our government into debt. Its time to replace our broken system with one that works that other countries have.

I watched my Dad burn through $700,000 on medical bills - not because he didn't have insurance - but because any insurance he could buy excluded any coverage on his life-long repository problem. Obamacare changed that.

Using the OPs analogy on car insurance, it would be like trying to buy collision insurance that excluded any type of car collisions - but only for you.

prior to the ACA one could get health care insurance that covered pre-existing conditions...it just would cost more...for obvious reasons.

As much as the lefties try to make this a negative. Pre-existing condition deal will not go away. It may come into effect with what the democrats call junk policies which are really the best for healthy, young people which covers then in cases of major medical bills only. These plans are perfect for a large group if individuals that are only concerned about a catastrophic medical situation.

Sure. And just like when the car "dies" because of all those damages, we can also get a good deal on another one of you if we get it on labor day weekend.

And do you use your car more than you use you?

And since a car has no right to life... why would you, right?

"Why the obsession with health insurance covering preexisting conditions?"

because insurance is tied to employment for most Americans, lose your job and any illness you have ever had can be used against you

if we had a pubic option like Obama wanted this would not be a issue

should a child that has cancer never be able to get coverage ever again in life, what about a child that had allergies, asthma, diabetes, the list goes on

Insurance companies refused to cover my wife because she had been hospitalized for high blood pressure when she was pregnant a week before my youngest was born. After my COBRA expired, there was only one company that insured her. At a very high cost and they excluded coverage for anything even remotely related to high-blood pressure. And this always served as an excuse for them to refuse payment for just about anything that wasn't just routine.

why, those on medicare should pay less as the insurance companies are responsible for less then someone not on medicare

personally I think medicare should cover 100% and just have co-pays

insurance companies pushed for 80% so they could still charge people for coverage on that 20%

BEFORE OBAMACARE, pre-existing conditions were covered in separate "high-risk" pools in most states. The reason was to help keep healthcare insurance low for the general population.

But Obamacare changed that and now healthcare insurance is un-affordable for everyone. Dems are just using it as a political football now, to win elections.

True, but an insurance company will charge you a higher premium if you have had accidents, or tickets!

And since Obamacare originated in the Senate that makes it unconstitutional.

Try having MS....I recommend anyone who gets this diagnosis either try to pretend otherwise or off themselves.
