Just to add....do any of you have any idea the disparity between the incredibly massive and capable U.S. Navy and USAF in comparison to those forces of China, Russia and North Korea put together?

I think its a sub support group, two combative's for ASuW/ASW support to the refueller itself, and the tug to help refuel subs, so those subs - that is the question..... you might know where they are but they'd have enough firepower to melt all our cities in one wave, if they wanted

When speaking generally, as opposed to specifically, we don't need articles. 'Dogs are great pets' for example. Dogs being general. In the quoted sentence, 'language' is general rather than specific, so it's correct.

I jumped on this for a reason. I'm an ESL teacher and tonight I had 45 minute session on articles with a lowish level class. Guess I'm still in teacher mode. For an English learner, one of the most difficult language points to grasp. Fun to teach though.

Don't get me started on punctuation!

Maybe the U.S. should have launched their own exercise from across the Pacific to test response as if there was an emergency. It is how bases in Japan are worthy for something like this.

The whole exercise is Putin's reply to Abbott's shirtfront stench.
    Some have it, others don't.
Our PM doesn't have it, very embarrassing.....
    Cheerio

Should Abbott NOT have raised the airliner shoot-down with Putin?

And you realize that these ships are, in diplomatic tersm, every bit as lame as Putin responding "Oh yeah? Shut up!" to a playground taunt.

    Yes,
but not by publically shirtfronting (which means an assault here in AUS) him.
What do you expect Putin to reply? Putin answered it in his way.......
I expect a top politician to be diplomatic, and that is wishful thinking with our current mob.....
    Regards

How the hell would you respond to someone publically accusing you and your country of committing murder without any evidence and facts? Even a Chinese newspaper condemned Australia's accusation based on "nothing" and told our foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop "to pull her head in". No other countries foreign affairs minister has ever been publically and internationally insulted by another country to such a degree.

It didn't take a genius to understand our dumbarse politicians were being instructed to be the "mouth-pieces" for the USA, and the rest of the world knew it. It made us look like a bunch of puppets, and I don't blame Putin for driving home his point, in showing Australia just how small they really are in the grander scheme of things.

As a country, we lost so much credibility, and it continues to be incredibly difficult to do business with countries, when they know the USA has their foot on Australia neck. This might surprise many people, but many would be shocked to learn how many times a business opportunity is lost or door gets closed in the face of an Australian business just because of our close ties to the US.

I have never thought that Australia's close connection and allies with the USA has even been prosperous or benefited Australia to the same degree that it has benefited the USA.

Blah, it does not mean assault, it just means to stand down someone chest to chest, in footy it can involve contact sure but its a long way from assault.

Okay, I'll bite. What outsized benefit has the U.S. derived from its alliance with Australia?

I mean, you're part of our efforts to maintain the balance of power in the Pacific, and contain China -- but that's in your interest at least as much as it is ours. And your contribution is fairly passive -- basing agreements and the like. I respect the fighting ability of the individual Aussie soldier, ship and plane, but there really aren't that many of you. Your entire surface fleet (combatants) is what, 12 frigates? Fine ships and crews, but militarily you're not that big a help.

The USMC is over 3 times bigger and covers all our air and ground capabilities then our RAAF, RAN and Army combined, and that does not include the USAF, USN, USCG, & US Army............ our military is 'tiny'. Luckily we have NZ to help us hehehe

Yes, but we have a bloody big moat around us they have to cross. And if they manage that, we have Abbott to shirt front them. We are as safe as houses.

Luckily we are in ANZUS so they'd probably remain off the table in their tubes.... but what would Obama do if they did - more sanctions :confusion:

Tony Stark....."They say the Best Weapon is one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree! The Best Weapon is the weapon you only have to use ONCE! That's how Dad did it. That's how America does it. And it's worked out pretty good from there!"

Now explain that statement in regards to Iraq. Isn't this the third attempt to bring peace there? What weapon have you only used Once?

Your comments reflect the problems we face internationally. Australia are p.i.s.s ants in a military capacity, pretending to be wolves in an arena, where we have no business being.

The USA benefits from its alliance with Australia from an economic perspective; not a military one. Maybe the only military benefit Australia serves is its geographical location in the South Pacific.

My father is still alive at 98, we often talk about things, thankfully I don't have to do many things the way he did, it's called progress.

I think you need to find a better country to live in, you don't seem to have much faith in ours. Oh that's right, this is one of the few countries you can say the things you say without disappearing.

You mean like dropping two atomic bombs on two non military targets like: Hiroshima & Nagasaki.

I was against the Invasion of Iraq.

I was involved in the initial Invasion of Afghanistan which I supported.

It was thought that the use of U.S. Military Power in Afghanistan was in too remore a place to adequately demonstrate U.S. Military Force.

Thus unlucky Iraq was chosen for this demonstration.

That is all it was about....being able to say...SEE THAT?

    It could be you!

Not with 300 ex-solicitors in control - No I don't have much faith in this country to make things better.
