    привет (privet)
Maybe Putin is going to "shirt front" Abbott, or us. It would be very interesting to see if the US would help us against Russia.
Maybe it's a good thing I learnt Russian as part of my Arts quota at university, might pay me to start brushing up on it.

So do you mean the article, be definite or just an article because your indefinite and no article is negative.

"Any language that doesn't contain articles isn't worth learning!", hmmm zero articles.

What a stupid non-story. A destroyer and cruiser, plus two support vessels, in international waters moving toward Australia. Whatever will Australia do?!?!?

Sometimes I think there ought to be a law where, if a news outlet publishes something egregiously stupid, someone gets to slap the reporter, editor, producer and anchor across the face, on air.

If we didn't want them there they wouldn't be there.

People hate on Putin for irrational reasons - there is no Russian ethnic group in Aus.

I can't understand why Putin thought he had to bring his own car to Australia.

I have seen more intelligent information come from "play-school". What does that really say about Australian media and journalists?

It's quite simple. The US go all over the world pushing THEIR politics down every one else's throats, then when they need to clean up the mess they created, they ask others to help.

Now unlike some here, I know why the US asks. It's not because they cannot do it themselves, they could turn the middle east into a huge sheet of glass unlivable for centuries if they wished. It is to give them some international justification for what they do.

They stuff things up, using the CIA and other covert methods to raise rebel armies they hope will do their bidding, then sink into oblivion never to be seen of again. But they don't (sink into oblivion), they then become the monsters. In this theater, it was Saddam Hussein, the Taliban and now ISIS. Just like Vietnam it starts out as a fight for ideology and ends in 100's of thousands of innocents being slaughtered.

The sad thing is that we follow them, we are usually put in a "Damned if we do, Damned if we don't" position.

What does any of that have to do with a couple of Russian warships sailing near Australia?

We need to take a logical step back, and consider stop being damned with them. Our biggest fault lies in thinking the US will come to our defense if something serious happens.

Okay. We're all still part of ANZUS, right? So that's a reasonable expectation.

What does that have to do with what the other poster wrote? Is he implying that the Russian warships are some sort of serious threat, and the U.S. won't come help?

If so, he's wrong on every count. The warships are laughably far from a serious threat, and if there were a serious threat, the U.S. would come help.

Abbott is taking a lot of backward steps, however they are not logical. Maybe we need to take a few steps forward, on our own, something new!

The US see us as nothing more than cannon fodder, and a geographical strategic location in the South Pacific for them to spy on Asian countries. Unfortunately for Australia, if China and Russia combined was to make a serious claim for world supremacy and attacked Australia, the USA would drop us like a hot potato to defend themselves.

And your evidence for that is ... nothing.

The U.S. is actually trying to devote MORE attention and resources to the Pacific, not less -- specifically to counter China. So you guys are on the front burner, not an afterthought.

Besides which, it will be decades before China has any serious force-projection capability. They have one small, barely serviceable, craptastic aircraft carrier that they bought used from Ukraine. They have no serious airlift or sealift capability. Not only could they not successfully mount an invasion; even if they did, they couldn't sustain or protect it.

Definitely something new. One day very soon, the US will drag us into a conflict or war of their creation, and we will never be able to get out of it. I think the USA started off having good intentions, but its now stagnated into a country obsessed with warmongering.

The US is not operating out on its own to some selfish agenda, to pretend that would be ignoring (for what reason?) all the other players and their own activities.

So I ask, who would you rather we allie ourselves with, because you can not go it alone in the world these days?

Anyway the real question is, how close are their submarines!!?!??! Maybe they snuck up the Brisbane River while the QPolice did there silly show of force with all their little boats (acoustic blocking).

This Russian Naval Task Force move is a JOKE!!!

For what possible purpose other than to have other world leaders to pay attention to him...Putin...the child sitting in the corner having a TIME OUT?

The U.S. Navy in this area reigns supreme and it is like a bunch of Russian Guy's in row boats trying to intimidate a USN. Nuclear Carrier Group.

Every single Russian sub is tracked from the moment it leaves port and Australian's have nothing to worry about.

That is not true at all.

If any Nation like China or Russia attempted any attack on Australia they would be blown out of the sky and water well before they could do any damage to Australia.
