I think you are confusing it with its mil-spec progenitor the M4.

I never had keyhole issues but have seen other folks with it at the range. I want to know how someone is involved with firearms since Vietnam and never even heard of keyholing.

    Just kinda weird.

If someone breaking in and you have to wait 5 minutes for the cops showing up, do you have the same plan of (in)action when your Grandkids are visiting and now their safety is endangered. Or is someone breaking in and you having to wait 5 minutes for the cops to show up the absolute worst scenario you can imagine?

The keyholing instances I've witnessed looked just like this image.

And by the profile of the holes, they are boat tail rounds. Just saying...

You are very observant. They do look like boat tail rounds.

You can get keyholing from *any* rifle. A slight imperfection in the bullet can cause it. But the .223 is not *designed* to keyhole. Never was and still isn't.

I don't think these are keyholes. Keyholing is *NOT* two holes with a piece of paper between them! These look like bullets that are either too light or too heavy for the rifling of the barrel. The bullets are not stabilizing. The bullets are wobbling in flight, they are not tumbling.

Remember too that if the target is not tight against the backing you can get enlarged holes as the paper moves under the impact of the bullet.

The holes in the lower right quadrant look just fine. What made them?

I wasn't implying that it was a design feature, it is indeed an undesirable occurrence. But it has occurred while I watched, and found it implausible that someone who supposedly knows firearms implicitly has never heard of keyholing.

And for the record, I've not seen any M16/AR15/Mini14 keyhole.

Um, the bullet hit..... sideways. Look in the center of the target, not the circled green ones.

And it's not my target so I couldn't tell you who shot it.

Oy, I thought those were recovered bullets! Need to get out the reading glasses I guess!

I've *never* seen that many keyhole at once. I'm still betting something was wrong somewhere!

At the fish and game club I had once belonged to the old guys called what you call key holing " blotching". I was told that I blotched my shots with my old .22 rifle. So you can add me as someone who was not immediately familiar with key holing.

The US military doesn't use the AR-15 and I don't know of any professional military that does. Do you?

I've never heard of the term blotching except used when applying a stain or finish to a wooden rifle stock.

Were they referring too leading ? When using ammunition like .22's and some handgun rounds that are all lead with no copper jacket where the lead builds up between the land and groves of the rifling where the bullet leaves the barrel not spinning ?

That is a better term for it, yes, as far as what hapless to the bullet.

That's right, they're gonna take your guns any day now. You'd better bury them three feet deep. Preferably under concrete. Call us when the job is done.

The M4 is not the progenitor of the Mini-14.

You are correct - iPhone typo - intended to type M14. Thank you for the correction.

No, they don't. They use the Mini-14G/B, the AC-556 has never been adopted by any military.

I have no grandkids so that's a moot point. If I happen to be home and in the unlikely event someone tries to break in I'll wait for however long it takes the police to show up. In the mean time they'll be introduced to my pit bull and he's not that friendly to strangers

Well, I am. Because that was the inspiration for the Mini 14.

I hope your pitbull is resistant to shotgun blasts. And why do you keep such a dangerous dog? Are you a gang member?
