And, I don't disagree with that at all- the entire core of the war was based around the imposition of atrocity and tyranny on an expanding basis.

Still, not particularly relevant to the civil war memorials. There may be some monuments somewhere celebrating slavery, but I have never heard of one.
Perhaps you have studied the history of the civil war- which in itself is a horror beyond what most people today can grasp. If I recall, Antietam alone stands as the deadliest one-day battle in our history, about 22,700 killed. I don't honor that war, nor any of the leaders as heroes we would recognize today- but that was a different time and the nature of life was different. Hopefully, what we do today will not be looked back on in the distant future and be seen as the conduct of evil men and total fools. I think there is a good chance of it.

It's just not possible for us to place ourselves today in the mindsets of the people who found that necessary 150 years ago.

If you confuse the two, it may help for you to recall that the States under discussion are all United, as the name indicates. Those who rejected the Constitution of the United States, rebelled against the United States, and killed those in the service of the United States must now respect the United States and not honor those who attacked it.
